    Trump disavows 'alt-right' supporters

    22 November 2016
From the section US & Canada

Donald Trump has repudiated the fringe "alt-right" group that celebrated his election win with Nazi salutes.

In a far-ranging interview with the New York Times, the US president-elect was quoted as saying: "I condemn them. I disavow, and I condemn."

He said he did not want to "energise" the group, which includes neo-Nazis, white nationalists and anti-Semites.

Alt-right supporters were filmed on Saturday in Washington DC cheering as a speaker shouted: "Hail Trump."

In the video, Richard Spencer, a leader of the "alt-right" movement, told a conference of members that America belongs to white people, whom he described as "children of the sun".

He denounced the movement's critics as "the most despicable creatures who ever walked the planet".

"Hail Trump, hail our people, hail victory!" Spencer shouts at one point as some members of the audience raise their arms in the Nazi salute.

Breitbart: The web that connects Trump and Farage

The gathering on Saturday drew protesters who blocked traffic around the Ronald Reagan Building, a federally owned conference centre in the nation's capital.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed concern on Tuesday that Mr Trump's election victory could give succour to white supremacists.

A senior official close to her described the "Hail Trump" video as "repulsive and worrying".

But Mr Trump stood by his chief strategist Steve Bannon, the former CEO of Breitbart News, and bristled at claims that the ultra conservative site was associated with the white nationalist movement.

"Breitbart is just a publication. They cover stories like you cover stories," he told the New York Times.

"If I thought he was a racist or alt-right or any of the things, the terms we could use, I wouldn't even think about hiring him", he said of Mr Bannon.

In Mr Trump's interview with the New York Times he addressed a range of topics:

Son-in-law Jared Kushner - a real estate heir who has no experience of diplomacy - could help forge peace between Israel and Palestinians, he suggested
The US should not be a "nation-builder" in the world, he argued
Republican leaders Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell "love" him again, he asserted
He could run his business and the country both "perfectly" with no conflict of interest
There is some "connectivity" between human activity and climate change

Earlier on Tuesday, Mr Trump's spokeswoman said he would not follow up on a campaign pledge to pursue a further inquiry into Hillary Clinton's emails.

His adviser said the president-elect would not appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the former secretary of state, and dropping the matter would help her "heal".

Later, Mr Trump was quoted as telling the New York Times: "I don't want to hurt the Clintons, I really don't.

"She went through a lot and suffered greatly in many different ways."

White Nationalist to Alt-Right Leader: ‘Knock It Off!’ With the Nazi Stuff

Nazi salutes are even too much for one white supremacist.

William Johnson, an early white nationalist supporter of Donald Trump, sent a letter to dozens of media outlets on Tuesday telling another Trump-loving member of the alt-right to quit embarrassing their movement.

Johnson took aim at Richard Spencer after a video, shot by The Atlantic, emerged from a Washington, D.C. conference over the weekend where Spencer was seen leading a room in chants of “Hail Trump, hail our people, hail victory!” while some made the Nazi salute.

White nationalists had already exulted in Trump's hiring of Breitbart CEO Steve Bannon as the mastermind of Trump’s campaign in the final months of the election, seeing him as a kindred spirit who will now serve as White House Senior Strategist. Bannon has come under fire for stories of alleged anti-Semitism and his own popularization of the alt-right on his website, which he called a "platform for the alt-right."

    “Dear Richard,

“Knock it off!” the letter begins. “Any of your positive discussions on the decline of Western Civilization is obscured by the offensive imagery displayed at the DC Ronald Reagan Building and at Maggiano’s Little Italy restaurant afterwards. You may refer to the stiff-armed greetings as the ‘Roman Salute’ but only about 10 professors of history will catch that comparison. Or you may claim that your 'Hail Trump' is nothing more than 'Hail fellow well met,' but only about 10 professors of English follow that line of reasoning. All the American public sees is imagery from a hated regime of 75 years ago. Nazi chic may currently be all the rage in Bangkok, but this isn’t Thailand.”

The disturbing visuals, Johnson acknowledged, are a bad look for a movement trying to make mainstream gains under a Trump administration while manipulating the media to cover them as just another faction of the Republican Party.

“Last Sunday, I was asked to appear on i24news (a well-respected Israeli news show) to opine on Trump’s cabinet picks,” Johnson continues. “I was not appearing as a circus-clown sideshow act as has been the case for the last 35 years, but instead, as a (quasi) legitimate talking head. So, I telephoned Steve Bannon’s personal friend and Breitbart News’s in-house legal counsel, Joel Pollak. Joel is a card-carrying, yarmulke-wearing orthodox Jew. I wanted him to give me the skinny on what Trump nominees would be good for Israel. Joel excoriated me on the phone and by a subsequent email saying that he wanted nothing to do with me. This is so even though many of our views dovetail. The reason he was so mean is because of the imagery you are promoting.”

A source familiar with the exchange said that Pollak was unaware of Johnson’s ideas when he was contacted. Pollak allegedly then Googled Johnson and subsequently made it clear that he and Breitbart did not share his views and did not wish to associate with him. Pollak was not even sure as to how Johnson got his number.

In his letter, Johnson goes on to say that he intended on using Pollak to help influence decisions made by Bannon.

“I also wanted Joel to put the very important bug in Steve Bannon’s ear that, as a way to counter judicial activism, President Trump should consider invoking what is called ‘the Departmental Theory of Constitutional Interpretation’ which provides that all three departments of the national government have an equal power to interpret the constitution,” Johnson says. “I couldn’t do that! Why? Because of the imagery you are promoting.”

Johnson was behind a pro-Trump, homophobic attack robocall directed at independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin in Utah. This came months after he resigned from his position as a California delegate for the RNC over the summer, after Mother Jones exposed his involvement. The Trump campaign attributed his appearance on the list to a database error.

Johnson claimed in the letter that Spencer had criticized his previous robocalls on behalf of Trump. When reached by email, Spencer told The Daily Beast that he hasn’t seen the letter and did not respond to a follow up question about his thoughts on the accusations when sent the content of the letter.

“The last two times we met, you criticized me for all the robocalls that I did and told me to stop lest I hurt Donald Trump’s campaign. While I admit the anti-McMullin robocall to Utah was (for me) uncharacteristically mean, it is said to be the single most effective ad in delivering a battleground state to Donald Trump, and by an overwhelming margin at that.”

There is no proof that the robocall made any difference in Utah.

Johnson finishes by acknowledging that the term “alt-right” has, in fact, allowed white nationalists to begin to normalize their ideas—so long as they do not give Nazi salutes.

“The term ‘alt right’ has given us a start-over moniker on which we can build a solid, positive reputation, but if you don’t rein in the negative National Socialist, leftist imagery, we will be viewed as that oblivious person driving a Ford Galaxy with his right turn signal on while turning left.”

The future of the movement, as Johnson sees it, is an inherent ability to take supremacist ideas and inject them into a mainstream dialogue—something that's much easier with Trump as president and Spencer not sounding like Joseph Goebbels.

Can we stop calling this the alt right?

    They're extremists.

Calling them alt right just feels like it gives them some sort of political legitimizing that they probably are definitely looking for.

This feels like it's going to be another case of the media trying to tie Trump to extremisn, and in turn is going to colossaly back fire.

Donald Trump's 'alt-right' supporters express dismay at disavowal

Some spoke out on Reddit and 4chan after Trump distanced himself from the far-right movement and appeared to walk back on his most extreme policies

President-elect Donald Trump’s disavowal of Richard Spencer and his far-right thinktank the National Policy Institute, a day after video of Spencer’s supporters giving the Nazi salute at an event in Washington DC surfaced, has dismayed some of his supporters on the “alt-right”.

“This constant virtue signaling needs to finally end, otherwise our civilization will simply collapse,” a commenter wrote underneath the article of Trump’s disavowal on rightwing news site Breitbart.

People in the myriad “alt-right” communities that have flourished online in recent years are also expressing their displeasure that Trump appears to have abandoned the most extreme of his policies – at least for now – such as building a wall and prosecuting Hillary Clinton.

They also objected to his visiting of the New York Times for an on-the-record meeting on Tuesday, at which Trump described the news organization as a “world jewel”.

On /pol/, the political discussion board of the anonymous message-board 4chan, one poster wrote: “Already reneging on his word before he even takes office?! People will remember that.”

Stephen Bannon and the alt-right in the White House

A post on Reddit’s r/altright board, one of the movement’s home bases, linked to Trump’s disavowal at the New York Times meeting and asked: “Anyone here feeling bamboozled by the Donald?” Dozens of commenters responded.

“You are fooled if you think Trump was going to give us some sort of permission slip to start cleansing America. He isn’t our ‘man on a white horse’,” one said.

Another wrote: “Trump can’t be non-negative on the alt-right. We support him because he agrees with us on important policy goals, not because he flatters us.”

Over on 4chan’s /pol/, fierce discussion was raging on the issue of how to deal with Richard Spencer and his neo-Nazi event. Many thought that Trump was right to disavow him.

Another wrote: “The leaders of the Alt-Right no longer look like attractive, young, rebellious counter-culture intellectuals, but now they look like fat, dumb racists.”
Opinion on the board was split, with many saying that the entire debacle was a “false flag” operation cooked up to discredit their movement, and others – a small minority – calling for the board to rally in support of Spencer.

On Reddit’s r/The_Donald board, one of the most popular pro-Trump corners of the internet, supporters urged patience in the face of signs discouraging to the “alt-right”, like the rumors that Mitt Romney was the frontrunner for secretary of state.

One post urged people to “stay fucking calm” until the appointment of Romney – who is a reviled figure amongst the “alt-right” – was reported by Breitbart.

DingDingDing!! There we go! It just wouldn't be an alt-right post without "false flag" being thrown in there somewhere.

As I predicted elsewhere, because conspiracy theorists were thrown into confusion by the defeat of "Killary" and the elevation of one of their "own" to the Presidency, they needed to come up with something else to "theorize" about. Unfortunately the only logical target was "their man" himself, Donald Trump.

Now everybody's favorite Cheeto-head gets to be on the receiving end of these lunatics.

I wonder if they'll demand his birth certificate?

He was an utterly incapable, unadapted, irresponsible, psychopathic personality, full of empty, infantile fantasies, but cursed with the keen intuition of a rat or a guttersnipe. He represented the shadow, the inferior part of everybody’s personality, in an overwhelming degree, and this was another reason why they fell for him.”

One can but hope, I hear he was born in Australia. The Alt-right seemingly grew out of libertarian freedom of speech issues coupled with the usual youth rebellion/shock jock characters ala Milo Yiannopoulos, wishing to poke the eye of the establishment.
It is of course also the natural home of the racists who happily co-opted the original meme and ran with it, portraying themselves as young radicals. A valuable lesson for nascent political movements that Чистка партийных рядов are actually necessary мой comrade commissar.
