While there are plenty of whites in the Democratic party to go after--60% of the party is white/non-Hispanic--blasting minorities in the process is at odds with the reality that the GOP needs to beef up its minority support to win national elections.

The Hispanic community is a logical target. Hispanics make up only a small percentage of either party, 2 or 3%, but they account for more than 16% of the independent vote. The GOP can draw on those independents but not by making them into scapegoats. Same goes for Asians. Only black-Americans affiliated with parties outnumber their independent brethren.
I doubt the GOP will ever win even a large minority of Hispanics.

Shortly before he died William Buckley wrote an interesting column on Hispanics. It was refreshingly candid, and free of the usual right wing rhetoric about the Constitution, the Founding Fathers, freedom, and so on.

He said that Hispanic immigration allows employers to reduce wages, and that is good. However, Hispanics vote Democratic, and that is bad. He went on to say that as other waves of immigrants became more prosperous they moved in a Republican direction. However, Hispanics who have been here for several generations remain in the lower half of the income distribution. When they conclude that their grandchildren will have the same low wage jobs they do they will opt for income redistribution.

Even affluent minorities sometimes vote largely Democrat. Jews average higher incomes than white gentiles. East Asians do too. Nevertheless, these remain Democratic constituencies.

The "social conservatism" many Republican politicians and commentators see in Hispanics is largely an illusion. They have higher rates of crime and illegitimacy than whites. They even have a slightly lower rate of church attendance.

Fair enough. But it wasn't too many years ago that people couldn't envision blacks supporting the Democratic party, once notorious for its pro-slavery stand.

I'll pass on the Buckley analysis. That was 22 million illegals ago.

I believe most blacks who were allowed to vote voted for Franklin Roosevelt, but I cannot document that.

I think the illegals should be identified and deported, but it does not seem as though that will happen.
