SUV driver in parade crash may have been fleeing a crime

(AP) — Investigators are looking into whether the SUV driver who plowed through a Christmas parade in suburban Milwaukee, killing at least five people and injuring more than 40, was fleeing a crime, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.

The joyous scene of marching bands and children dancing in Santa hats and waving pompoms turned deadly in an instant on Sunday, giving way to screams and scenes of crumpled bodies as the SUV sped through barricades and struck dancers, musicians and others. Members of a “Dancing Grannies” club were among those killed.

One person was taken into custody after a Waukesha police officer opened fire to try to stop the vehicle, authorities said.

Two law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized the discuss the matter publicly, identified the person as 39-year-old Darrell Brooks.

Investigators were questioning him about an earlier crime, which one of the officials described as an argument involving a knife. The official cautioned the investigation was still in the early stages.

Online court records showed that a person named Darrell Brooks Jr., with a birthdate making him 39, has two open criminal cases in Milwaukee County. In one case, filed Nov. 5, he is charged with resisting or obstructing an officer, reckless endangering, disorderly conduct, bail jumping and battery. Records show $1,000 cash bond was posted on Friday.

In the other case, filed in July 2020, Brooks is charged with reckless endangering and illegal possession of a firearm.

Waukesha Police Chief Dan Thompson gave no immediate details about the person in custody or any possible motive. Thompson said that he did not know if the driver was hit by the officer’s bullets but that no bystanders were wounded.

On its social media account, the city put the number of dead at at least five.

The horror was recorded by the city’s livestream and onlookers’ cellphones. One video shows the moment the SUV broke through the barricades and includes the sound of what apparently were several gunshots.

Another video shows a young child dancing in the street as the SUV speeds by, just a few feet from her, before it hurtles into parade participants a few hundred feet ahead. One video, of dancers with pompoms, ends with a group of people tending to a girl on the ground.

“There were pompoms and shoes and spilled hot chocolate everywhere. I had to go from one crumpled body to the other to find my daughter,” Corey Montiho, a Waukesha school district board member, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “My wife and two daughters were almost hit. Please pray for everybody. Please pray.”

The Milwaukee Dancing Grannies posted on its Facebook page that some of its members were among the dead. The organization describes itself as a “group of grannies that meet once a week to practice routines for summer and winter parades.”

“Our group was doing what they loved, performing in front of crowds in a parade putting smiles on faces of all ages, filling them with joy and happiness,” the post said.

“Those who died were extremely passionate Grannies. Their eyes gleamed ... joy of being a Grannie. They were the glue ... held us together.”

A Roman Catholic priest, parishioners and Waukesha Catholic schoolchildren were among those injured, the Archdiocese of Milwaukee said.

Chris Germain, co-owner of the Aspire Dance Center studio, had about 70 people in the parade, including children as young as 2 being pulled in wagons and participants up to 18 years old.

Germain, whose 3-year-old daughter was in the parade, said he was driving at the head of their entry when he saw a maroon SUV that “just blazed right past us.” A police officer ran past in chase. Germain said he jumped out of his own SUV and gathered the girls who were with him to safety.

Then he walked forward to see the damage.

“There were small children laying all over the road. There were police officers and EMTs doing CPR on multiple members of the parade,” he said.

Angelito Tenorio, a West Allis alderman who is running for Wisconsin state treasurer, said he was watching the parade with his family when they saw the SUV come speeding into the area.

“Then we heard a loud bang,” Tenorio said. “And after that, we just heard deafening cries and screams from the crowd, from the people at the parade. And people started rushing, running away with tears in their eyes, crying.”

The Waukesha school district canceled classes Monday and said extra counselors would be on hand for students and staff. The parade’s list of participants included cheer, dance and band entries associated with district schools.

Gov. Tony Evers said he and his wife were “praying for Waukesha tonight and all the kids, families, and community members affected by this senseless act.”

The parade, held each year on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, is sponsored by the city’s Chamber of Commerce. This year’s event, the 59th, had the theme of “comfort and joy.”

Waukesha is a western suburb of Milwaukee, and about 55 miles (90 kilometers) north of Kenosha, where Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted Friday of charges stemming from the fatal shooting of two men and the wounding of a third during unrest in that city in August 2020.

Looking less and less likely, and more and more likely to be a race based hate crime

The incident was not related to terrorism, and Mr. Brooks was not being pursued by the police at the time, he added. He was captured shortly after speeding away from the scene, according to the chief, who said he was one of the first officers to arrive at the scene.

A police officer fired shots at Mr. Brooks’s vehicle, but “due to the amount of people” at the parade had to stop. No bystanders were struck, Mr. Thompson said.

He was not fleeing a knife fight, as earlier speculation had it. He was not being chased by police. Why did he do it? Why did he drive his car on purpose into a crowd of people at a Christmas parade?

We don’t yet know. But we do know from his social media postings that Darrell “MathBoi Fly” Brooks really hated white people:

Again, this is all circumstantial. We can’t say what motivated Brooks to drive into that crowd of people. Was it anger over the Rittenhouse verdict? We will see. This will become clear in time, I think. But watch, listen, and read carefully to how the media report this unfolding story. A suspect with a record of posting anti-white hatred online plows his SUV into a crowd of what appears to be white people. There might well be no connection between his racial animus and what he did in Waukesha. But we all know perfectly well that if the races were reversed, we would be in media Armageddon now.

By the way, before he pointed his car towards those parade-goers, Brooks was already the scum of the earth. From the NYT:
Darrell E. Brooks Jr., who is accused of driving his maroon 2010 Ford Escape into the Christmas parade in Waukesha, has a long, violent criminal history — and was freed just six days ago on $1,000 bail after being accused of trying to run over his girlfriend with the same S.U.V.

Mr. Brooks, 39, who is from Milwaukee, has been charged with or convicted on an array of charges over the past 22 years, including battery, domestic violence, cocaine possession and resisting arrest in several jurisdictions in Wisconsin.

He has served at least two jail sentences and spent years on probation and in court-mandated work-release and anger management programs, records showed.

On Nov. 2, Mr. Brooks was arrested in Milwaukee after the mother of his child accused him of punching her in the face in a hotel room, then following her in his S.U.V. into the parking lot of a gas station, where he hit her with the car, according to the police.
In the realm of spirit, seek clarity; in the material world, seek utility.

Suspect accused of driving into Wisconsin Christmas parade has lengthy record

Darrell Brooks recently posted bail of $1,000 and $500 in current cases against him.

At least five people were killed Sunday when the vehicle tore through a Christmas parade in the Milwaukee suburb, leading to the arrest of the man, Darrell Edward Brooks, 39.

Brooks has a decades-long criminal record that includes arrests for sexual abuse, drugs, battery and domestic abuse, records showed.

He has two active cases in Milwaukee.

In one, Brooks was charged in July 2020 with two counts of reckless endangerment and possession of a dangerous weapon as a convicted felon. He posted $500 bail in February.

In the other matter, he was charged Nov. 5 with resisting or obstructing an officer, bail jumping, recklessly endangering safety, disorderly conduct and battery, court records showed.

The last three charges were connected to domestic abuse, according to allegations in court records.

The woman alleged to be the victim in that incident was the mother of Brooks’ child. Court records allege that Brooks punched her and later ran over her with his car in a gas station parking lot.

The documents say police noticed dried blood on her face, a swollen lip and tire tracks on her left pants leg.

Brooks posted a $1,000 cash bond to secure his freedom Nov. 11, the court records showed.

The prosecutor in the two cases could not be immediately reached for comment Monday. Brooks' most recent attorney declined to discuss the charges.

“The State’s bail recommendation in this case was inappropriately low in light of the nature of the recent charges and the pending charges against Mr. Brooks,” Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm said in a statement about the charges from this month. “The bail recommendation in this case is not consistent with the approach of the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office toward matters involving violent crime, nor was it consistent with the risk assessment of the defendant prior to setting of bail.”

Chisholm added: “This office is currently conducting an internal review of the decision to make the recent bail recommendation in this matter in order to determine the appropriate next steps.”

There is also a warrant out for Brooks’ arrest in Nevada, where he is accused of failing to appear at a court hearing in 2016. He was scheduled to answer a charge that he failed to notify authorities about a move, as he was required to do because he was on the state sex offender registry, police in the city of Sparks said.

Brooks was convicted in 2006 of felony statutory sexual seduction for impregnating a 15-year-old girl, police said.

Wisconsin criminal recordson Brooks go back to 1999 with an arrest for battery, in which he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months behind bars and three years’ probation.

He was sentenced to 50 days behind bars in 2002 for possession of THC, the main compound in cannabis.

Brooks got a 20-day sentence for a 2003 arrest for misdemeanor resisting or obstructing an officer.

A 2005 arrest for misdemeanor obstructing an officer led to a two-day sentence.

After Brooks pleaded no contest to felony strangulation and suffocation in 2010 and to violating his probation, he was sentenced to 11 months behind bars and three years’ probation.

He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor resisting or obstructing an officer in 2011, leading to a 37-day jail sentence.

In 2011, a second incident of THC possession resulted in a 180-day jail sentence.

Misdemeanor bail jumping and another THC offense at the end of 2011 led to another 180-day jail sentence.

          Narrative...

Rittenhouse must be a white supremacist despite no evidence.

Waukesha must be a random event despite evidence of racial animus. Next year there be another report citing the risk of white wing extremist, but this attack won't be mentioned because to the Left there is no such thing as Leftwing violence.

Is this directed at me for some reason?

Nah, probably directed at me. Because a picture of Rittenhouse posing with white supremacists and proudly (no pun intended) flashing a white power hand gesture couldn't possibly be evidence of anything at all. (For extra points, obstinately deny that the white supremacist group is actually white supremacist).

Astry, it was a response to Pari.

Top, you can call the PB a lot of things. I can't stand them. They are an extremist neo-fascist organization that engages in Political violence but they are not White Supremacist.

The whole OK hand signal was created out of whole cloth on 4chan. Leftie dupes ran with it and now it's done to troll the Left.

The Proud Boys are recognized as white supremacist, whether you want them to be or not, and the OK hand signal is now a bonafide white power gesture regardless of its trolling origin.

Nitpicking here. Only to us in the West. You will be at least frowned upon if you accused Hindus in India of being Nazis when they display the swatiska. I strongly suggest you train up some good running legs before you do.

That link I posted is from the ADL. The exact same source that you used with regards to the OK sign. The SPLC is mentioned only once, and even then only in passing, to remark that the Proud Boys leader sued the SPLC for defamation for labeling them a hate group. I'm assuming of course that you also don't believe the Proud Boys are a hate group then....merely a "extremist neo-fascist organization that engages in Political violence" (your words, not mine). But they're not a hate group, right?

                              Gullible? Yeah. Sure.
