I plan to join the military in 2 years and am completely lost. I have family in all branches except Airforce (coming from the USA). I want to be a special operative, I understand there is lots of work, I get the fact that you may die in the process. I am not here because I saw this on Call of Duty, I am here because I am serious about this. If anyone that honest to God knows about the following questions can help me then thank you. Do not try and talk me out of this, it will not help.
1) To become a Navy SEAL do you have to be in the Navy a certain time or are you aloud to go for it straight out of the gates?
2) For someone that wants to serve under the highest order of leaders and get the absolute best training possible then would SEAL's, Green Beret, or Force Recon be the best options. This is not a vs thread, it is just a question of do all 3 of equally difficult training.
3) Which branch do you recommend for a person that is strong willed, smart (4.0 smart), and wants to go as far as possible.

How about step 1, get through recruit course first. You've got a long road ahead of you and while the SEALs may be your dream right now, you may find other arms more appealing after a point, say the Engineers.

Well, the Engineers are fine if you like digging latrines... ;) but if you like blowing shit up, Armor is definitely the way to go. It's much safer on the battlefield surrounded by about 60 tons of steel.

Engineers definitely blow more things up than zipperheads and with a much, much bigger bang.

Don't listen to any of them. I don't know shyt about any military and i've never been near one but the obvious career is ships Captain. You get to boss people around and shoot some amazing shyt at engineers, tankers, artillerymen etc without them having snowballs chance of shooting back.

Because it's a lesser job filled by lesser people than a Captain in the Navy, rank or not.

I have to agree with the Colonel and advise you to think a little lower for the time being. The US Navy Seal is open to the very few and only the very best are considered. Don't imagine for one minute you can walk into any military gate and become a Seal, the PX lady will kick your ass and throw you off base.

PS. Whatever you do don't admit to being 'smart' if you cannot spell allowed correctly..details matter.

Candidates for SEALs (as well as those who want to do SWCC, Air Rescue and EOD) need to pass a somewhat difficult Physical Training Test and score fairly high in specific categories of the ASVAB just to get their papers. There's no prior service requirement, though - you can enlist as a SEAL. They go through boot camp in their own divisions (Division 800-899), and from there go to BUD/S which apparently has an ~80% dropout rate.
