Can someone please explain what is going on here to me? US Marine Corps must redefine mission: Gates - Yahoo! News

Suddenly the government can spend new billions on health care extended unemployment benefices, and propping up entire sectors of the economy, but seem to be unable to support the Marine Corps? I fully understand and support intensive cost cutting especially in the procurements side but whats going on here?

that's what the marine corps WANTS to do-- i'm not sure how that's interpreted as being unable to support the marine corps.
There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "My ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."- Isaac Asimov

That article admittedly short on details contains "Gates said America would continue to need a force with the ability "to project combat forces from the sea under uncertain conditions," and that he had ordered Navy and Marine Corps reviews to better determine the future of maritime military forces." Nothing about the marines wanting to have their operational scope slashed, a navy review to determine the future of maritime forces. When was the last time that the navy didn't want to fold marine aviation completely under their control, and felt that fleet marines should be a navy run deal and forrget about the rest of the marines to build themselves fancy new toys?
