  • Stupid things your friends have said relating to military equipment.

I'd like to think a lot of us are knowledgable from things such as tanks, IFV's, APC's, Small arms, Boats, Ships, Carriers and so on. But not everyone is like us and some of our friends who think they know about such things spout off stupid and misguided comments that make most of us shake our heads.

So for an example in my case, someone started an arguement about AK vs AR. And one of my friends said "An AK can be accurate because you can put a scope on it."

Someone also told me that an AK-74 can fire any bullet from 5.45 to 7.62 without swapping barrels or anything.

Obviously I don't wanna lose any friends so I generally say "I don't think so because of *obvious reasons*" or "I haven't heard about that."

So what experiences have you had that are similar to this case?

How about "How come soldiers don't just use shotguns? They're more powerful."

That was from my Uncle Waddy. He managed to miss all the wars my father & all my other senior relatives somehow got stuck with. He was a golfer. No (intentional) offense offered to golfers. One can't avoid unintentional offense to golfers.

Just today from my roommate. I passed a duce and a half and two ABRAMS APVs on the orad. He's a mill tech and heavy equipment nerd with know knowledge. I have no clue what he passed. Probably hard top humvees, but I know it wasn't an abrams armoured personal carrier. I wonder what would happen if you take a modern MBT chassis and turned it into the base for an IFV probably to expensive to consider.

On topic: I hear all kinds of eye-roll-inducing comments from people all the time, though can't really think of any specifics.

I do recall one fellow claiming that it was the British that attacked Pearl Harbor (those were British pilots in those Zeros apparently) to goad the US into World War II...don't ask me about the logic of that.

And anyway, that's more of a looney-tunes conspiracy theory than military equipment related.

My neighbour is of Mideast extraction and some of the tales i hear make me want to put my head in a vice and slowly put myself out of the misery that he puts my ears through.

Too many to list but did you hear apparently Hezbollah has nukes... they just didnt want to use them during the last war

I always get a laugh from the students here. The usual question I get since I was in the Air Force is "did you fly jets?" They automatically assume that since I was AF I flew. Then when I tell them I was a desk jockey, I get an "oh"! THEN when I tell them I did top secret work their eyes light up and of course I get the "I guess you can't tell me what you did cause you'll have to shoot me!" And when they see my picture of me in my BDU's of course I was in the Army! lol Oh, and when I tell them I was in Korea, they ask if I saw any Koreans! I'm sure they're referrring to N. Koreans!

It could be worse. Just imagen if they would ask if you fought in the war (then you would actually have a reason to shot'em).

I'm not in the military, but I'm one of those military/tech buffs who doesn't pretend to know stuff or make stuff up.

I've heard lots of things, the best are usually surrounding history. Some girl at work in the run-up the the '08 election was harping about how America needs to change, we are selfish, blah blah blah, and we came around to WWII. Her "educated opinion" was that this was a perfect example of how selfish we are, offering "no help" to Europe and the cause against Hitler until we were directly attacked. She would hear nothing of my counter-argument, that our support in material, technology, intelligence, and "unofficial" manpower was what kept them from crumbling for the first two years that we weren't fighting

Once during an argument a friend of mine claimed that chinese have the capability to build a billion (1.000.000.000) fighters. I think its hard to top that :D.

Anytime anyone states "facts" based on Call of Duty games, or any other video game but COD4 seems to be the worst. I've lost count of how many arguments I've had with people who play too much Modern Warfare.

Lets not get started on that. Just had an argument with a friend. He believes the mp40/38 (9mm) is more powerful than the thompson (.45) because thats how it works on COD WAW... and why would they lie???

Pain rising.... must... kill.... angry.... *head explodes*

My favorite is when my friends insist AK-47s are about the most accurate rifle in existence.
