In other words, the Taliban and al-Qaida were just as tough as the mujahideen who fought the Russians, and more than willing to confront U.S. ground forces, but were broken by the hopelessness that American-style air power inflicted upon them.

The mujahideens were back then supported by the Pakastanis, who were, more importantly; supported by the Americans. A lot of money and resources were pumped into Afghanistan by the US in the '80's to get the Russians a bloody nose.

The Serbian withdrawal was more for political reasons than military ones. The fact is airpower has has never won a war in of itself. Yes, it plays a vital role in modern war, but this "we'll bomb everything and never need ground troops" rubbish is totally moronic.

Hmm, in some situations there's no need for ground troops or military occupation at all.. Imagine you're a tinpot tyrant constantly sounding off against the west, with a hand in terrorist funding and support, and with nuclear power plants being built which could provide ingredients for nuke bombs..
American/Western air power is so overwhelming that the west simply need to make you an offer no tinpot tyrant or regime anywhere in the world dare refuse - "Cool it or well put a volley of cruise missiles through the windows of your palaces and luxury villas when you least expect it.
Then if we have to we'll launch sustained stealth and cruise missile strikes to bomb your country back into the stone age by taking out all your power stations, bridges, rail stations, airports, water and sewage plants, factories, ports etc, and furthermore we'll slap a million-dollar Wanted Dead or Alive label on your heads and you'll have to spend the rest of your life holed up in a cave"

PS - Irans nuclear power stations are bound to get hit as soon as they pose a threat, lets just hope Bush or the next US President has the guts to give the order to take 'em out..
