  • what does the comsumer want?

As I had said in a post before I am going to school to become a gunsmith. after i am finished with that at some point i want to make my own company. But what I dont know is what does the market want and what will it support?

There's always a demand for a 1911 smith. Americans have an almost unhealthy fascination with the 1911 platform. It was created 100 years ago as a military handgun feeding ball ammo. It has since changed to a precision shooting platform feeding all types of ammo. But the design is still ball first, HP second. People also like custom built 1911s, which I don't see the point. It's not a computer where I can over emphasize in one area and just skimp by on another to make it do one thing very well (playing FPS games). I suppose a race gun would be something like that.

Anyways, I've only seen people asking for 1911 smiths on the boards I visit. I've never heard of anyone asking for a Sig smith or a Glock smith.

Can't tell you anything about rifles since I rarely shoot one.

Thank you Gunnut. And I can see your point, as there seems to be more company's that produce 1911 type pistols then I have birthdays. Something that I want to consider trying was finding a business partner and trying to get a new design into the market. Something of a hybrid with different things from different firearms ( I'm hopeful there are no patents on many mechanisms that i would like to use). Oh and if you guys have any tips for me or things that you don't think I have considered please I am all ears.

There is currently a big boom in small concealed carry type hand-guns, the .380 has made a big comeback, designing a small high quality derringer or auto would probably provide an entry into the gun business, and they would be less expensive to build and to buy.

The .410 shotgun has also been very popular lately, for self defense in carbines and in pistols. Handgun caliber carbines are cool too, a 9mm carbine might be a big seller, with all the cheap and effective ammo readily available.- The .223 AR clones and mods are also hot right now.

Light weight, accuracy, style and ergonomics would all be things that could set your designs apart.

If I was doing this, I would start a sketchbook of ideas and concepts. What kind of guns would you like to build?

I'm not sure if this is the hybrid you have in mind, a Kel Tec PMR-30 pistol chambered in 22WMR:

          Kel Tec CNC

Supposedly both locked breech and blowback at the same time!

Surplus military rifle specialist. With the cost of ammo and rifles these days, these cheap alternatives have become extremely popular (I hardly know a decent gun collection without a Mosin-Nagant or Mauser in it). Knowledge of these types of firearms is essential for any gunsmith.

You gotta know your assault rifles as well, especially the big two: AK's and AR's. HK's, FN's, and others may make appearances, but the first two are the most important.

well from what i can gather pistols are more popular then rifles. so i think starting out pistols should be the way i head towards first. I can agree with the need of knowing the AK's the AR's and the FN's but not the HK's the number of rifles other then the g3 type rifles in Minnesota is few and far between and even the number of g3 type rifles i have seen here can be counted on the fingers of two hands. im just not seeing the need and i'm sure alot of people couldent buy them even if they wanted to, SOME HK pistols yes but rifles no.

Also i was just wondering if demand would be high for an AR fireing the 5.45x 39. i saw an add for one about two years ago and then nothing.

perhaps an AR in .22 Mag would be a better seller, The 5.45 is so similar to 5.56 that I can't see it distinguishing itself. Is 5.45 any cheaper than surplus 5.56?

I just looked around real quick and at the moment from one website 1000 rounds tends to be cheaper by almost $100 for 5.45. $245 for 5.45 and $333 for 223.

That does sound like a distinction!

I hate you.You have tons of those beauties for almost nothing. And you can have all the guns in the world to shoot it.I hate you twice(I guess I'm now an America basher).

Although I'd stay away from any AR platform shooting a 5.45 .There is no difference wrt accuracy and penetration between an AK and an AR in the range optimal for a 5.45.Why use a complicated&expensive tool when a cheap and reliable one will do the job.Besides,I don't like too much changes inside the base platform.

With 9mm center-fire ammo being the cheapest. I believe that the good quality 9mm revolver should make a comeback and would be more popular than ever. I have been personally waiting for a company to actually manufacture the Bren Ten 10mm pistol.

Well my friend consider takeing a holiday trip here and really see how much you hate our gun lifestyle :D.

the reason i want to make a AR in 5.45 (or an AR 5.45 upper) is because a company that can offer things of variety for the many types of ammo out there it will have a better chance in the market. besides i like the AR's ergonomics much better then the AK's and alot of people have the same thoughts. they both have there trade offs and i like both rifles designs.

how about a .410 AR - with an adaptor to shoot .45 LC?
