I wonder if the machining is a bit on the aggressive side.
The front strap on my RIA 1911 is checkered, along with the back strap. The grip is smooth, which I don't have problem with since I don't have sweaty palms. However, the grip panel doesn't cover the entire side of the grip. The edge of the front strap and that empty space between it and the grip panel bother me. The checkering on the back strap is aggressive, but not bad.

Overall ergonomics isn't bad. The problem for me is the weight and the "pointy" grip. The trigger is nice, different, but nice. It breaks very clean after a short uptake. Grip angle is about the same as the P220.

Ruger Mk III is good. But I prefer the Mk II.

Mk III is the Mk II with an American style mag release and a loaded chamber indicator on the left side of the gun.

Why do I prefer Mk II? I'm training my left hand to shoot. The European style mag release is very nice for a left-handed shooter. Hopefully I can graduate from a Mk II to a P225 soon. I have one with European mag release.

Oh yeah, the Luger grip angle is nice. Glock took after this trait.

        • I had been searching ammo deals all over the net and then dropped into Wally world on Sunday. Saw some 100 Rd value packs of Federal 230 gr 45 ACP FMJ at $29, picked up whatever was there in the store (4 boxes). Also saw a $95 box of Remington 250 Rds pack of 230 gr 45 ACP FMJ, but it was all gone

          Ammo is indeed expensive :bang:

Sounds like a good price - keep in mind, if you get it on the internet, shipping adds considerably to the cost. Federal and Remington are pretty good ammo, there are some cheap brands that are bad for your gun, corrosive primers and lots of residue... Some of the less expensive ammo offerings can't be reloaded, if that matters to you.

I actually have a local shop which is already pretty cheap, a 50 Rd box of CCI comes to around 16.5, pre tax with no cc fees. Less than that I can get Russian steel cased ammo, but many of the indoor ranges do not allow that. Also, I am not into reloading right now. I just need to be able to go out and shoot more, but the new baby has put additional responsibilities on me.

              • I have shot a lot of CCI, I like it. The Russian steel case is against the rules at my range too, they don't recommend it at all.

I suspect the reason why most don't allow Russian steel case ammo is because they are not reloadable. Ranges collect all the used brass and send them wholesale to commercial reloaders. No one wants to sort through these steel cases. It's an added expense.

I've used CCI Blazer Brass. They smell bad.

I just looked up RMAmmo.com, where I bought a few cases of ammo 2 years ago. It's out of business...

                  • The range I go to allows CCI non-brass casings. But not the Russian Tula or Wolf ammo. Maybe its too cheap, they can't afford to sell it?

Whacked my first critter the other day too, just a brown hare as the foxes don't seem to be coming out to my whistle, but I'm joining a conservation hunting group so hopefully there will be plenty of other opportunities.
Well, I've picked up my Tikka T-3 in .223 and it has me shooting straighter than ever even with cheap Hornady Steel Match ammo, so I'm chuffed. Tikka prices have just come down here just after I bought the .223 :slap:. A bit of a shit but but it provided me with a good excuse to order one in .308, blued with walnut. I've purchased a Leupold VX-2 4x12 with adjustable objective as well, which will go on the .223 and the 3x9 will go on the .308.

I've also just ordered a CZ-452 Special in .22LR with Beechwood stock and a 4x12 Leupold VX-1 on it for cheap target practice and silouette comps, will pick up in a couple of weeks. That will give me the four calibres that every Australian hunter should own, .22, .223, .308 and 12 gauge, good to reliably take any game on this continent perhaps with the exception of bush cattle and buffalo. As I don't see myself hunting them for a while .375 H and H can wait :)

Save some cash and keep an eye on the calendar. Washington Arms Collectors Sooner or later a show will be nearby. Show up early for the best selection and have a good idea of prices before hand so you will know immediately if you are looking at a good deal or not. BTW a case of ammo fits inside a diaper box for that ever important move from the car trunk to the garage while under "moms" supervision.
Removing a single turd from the cesspool doesn't make any difference.

                            Good point.

Maybe the Russian brands generally have steel core bullets?

I really don't understand the bias against Russian ammo. They work great for the money.

I think its for the brass.

The indoor ranges here will only allow brass cases FMJ or JHP. My feeling is that they would like all the reloadable brass they can get their hands on. One outdoor range here does allow any type of ammo (except tracers etc.) but I guess the expectation for outdoor ranges is that a lot of the folks would make off with their brass anyway.
