  • I like the barrel of the 500 thunder ranch for home defense. If someone is stupid enough to break into your home and lucky enough to survive the shells, you can easily break bones, bash his skull in, bust through doors etc. I would say that the sound of a 12 Gauge racking coupled with a laser on ones chest would be an ultimate mind changer.

What do you have in mind for the slugs?
Removing a single turd from the cesspool doesn't make any difference.

    • Slugs are bad where I live. Not "bad" like the liberals want to ban it bad, but bad as in too much penetration in a residential area. That shit goes through a few sheets of drywalls and will still kill someone behind it.

I use #6 steel shots for home defense.

Bluesman already said he was using #6 or #8 birdshot for home defense. He said he wanted the ability to shoot slugs as well and curiosity got the better of me.

And no, you can't have it. I found this on sale and this model doesn't go on sale often.

            • Dude...that is way too green for me. I like my plain wood grips...

Anyways, I finally had time to go to the range. I put 50 rounds through the 1911 just to function test. It's flawless. Not a single problem of any kind. The only problem was the shooter. He's a terrible shot. The gun is very accurate, but I am hit and miss. I brought my Sig P220 just to compare. Here's what I have noticed:

              1. P220 is way lighter
              2. There are too many protruding angles on the 1911
              3. I need high contrast sights on the 1911

Your RIA setup is pretty similar to my SR1911, the only thing that protrudes while shooting is the safety, which is a good thing as you can rest your thumb on it. Compared to that the Sig seems to be have way too many buttons, knobs and whatnot.

About the sights, do you have the GI sights? If yes then I agree that the GI sights suck, but this being a 1911 you should be able to get whatever sights you want, right?

When I grip the gun, I can feel the edges on the front strap and the pointy grip safety. I am not used to these on my P220. They are just enough to be distracting when I shoot.

I have Novak sights. One reason I waited to buy the Tac model is the sights. I think the front sight on the GI model is machined onto the slide but the Tac model has dovetailed front sight.

Hmm, I was thinking that with the smooth grips and lack of front strap checkering would in fact give the opposite experience. From pics online it seems that the grip safety does not have the memory grooves that my SR1911 has, which would have made it even more "pointy". I wonder if the machining is a bit on the aggressive side.

How do you line the overal ergonomics thought, apart from this? I like the single stack design, the grip angle and the trigger, especially compared to double stacks like Sigs and Glocks.

                    • Some real love for the 1911 being shown here.:) I believe I need to go to the range and shoot one. The most comfortable handguns I've shot was a Ruger Mk III a w/4" barrel. I have fired 1911's before and I don't remember the same degree of comfort the Luger shape offers.

To be fair, the capacity sucks, as does the weight, and the fact that it is a pricey and finicky gun. But its comfortable, fun and accurate and way prettier than most about anything. The way I look at it, it is similar to the fun sports car that you would take out during the weekends, after commuting all week in your boring but reliable Honda/ Toyota, analogous tothe Glocks/ Sigs/ XDs you have for your carry/ duty needs.

By the way, I applied for my WA CPL this week, hopefully will get it in 30 days. There may be a Glock 19 or 23 in the future

Drink enough and even a Glock will look sexy.
