You'd love the Winchester gunnut. It's silky smooth after 110 years.

You could stick it in a gunny sack with a handful of shells and shake it, that thing would probably come out loaded.

I love those Winchester lever guns. I have a Model 1894 Trapper in 357 mag made in the 1990s. It's my prize possession because it was one of the last Winchesters made in Connecticut.

        • On an impulse bought a Pietta 1858 Remington in .36 cal. Ordered a .38spl (matches my SW Detective) conversion cylinder from Taylors. We'll see how it works...hmmm.

Those BP guns are a lot of fun - you can shoot wax slugs if you don't have a lot of space - I made them from canning wax - just pack shavings in the cylinder until you have a nice solid plug - flush with the top. They are suprisingly potent - I once shot a hole in a 3/8" sheet of plywood with one - they will definately make holes in paper target.

Whoa I was thinking about the same thing. Never went through with it because I would have to hand load low pressure .38 special rounds. Let me know how yours go. I would love to have one with a conversion cylinder if it can safely handle commercial .38 special rounds.

                      • you know, if you think about the state of gun/rifle technology, it seems to me that the gun/rifle itself really hasn't advanced much in the last 50 years. (most of the advances have been in optics/scopes.)

it's a bit surprising to me in that aspect-- it's as if we were fighting in vietnam with WWI bolt action rifles, or for that matter WWI with muzzle-loaders. i get the same sense when i hear some of our guys in iraq/afghanistan actually switched back to the m14, lol.

Well, the metallic cartridges haven't advanced much over the last century. The propellant is better. The repeating mechanism in firearms is better and more reliable. Semi auto pistols have entirely replaced revolvers in service, as automatic rifles replaced bolt action ones.

The single greatest advance in firearm design over the last half century would be, in my opinion, material science. Polymer made guns more durable, cheaper, and lighter. A Glock would probably last forever with minimal maintenance. They are cheap too.

You are right though. The basic operating principle of modern firearms hasn't changed much. We just made them lighter, more reliable, more durable, and sometimes, even more accurate.

Just a note, I don't like polymer guns much. I prefer old fashioned wood and steel.

Close. It's not on the list of handguns tested by the CA DOJ, so it's not "safe" for consumers.

The whole thing is ludicrous. Some schmuck modified the rules so that every single pistol submitted now needs to have 1. loaded chamber indicator, 2. magazine disconnect, to ensure public safety. Any gun that is on the list already is grandfathered in, as long as the company keeps paying an annual extortion to the DOJ to keep it on the list. Once it falls off the list, it will need to be re-submitted for testing. If it doesn't have those features, then it's not eligible.

You can check out what pistols are on the DOJ list approved for sale to the public:

Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale - Firearms Division - California Dept. of Justice - Office of the Attorney General

C&R pistols are exempted from this list, but still need to go through a class 1 FFL, a 10-day waiting period, and registered with the state.

what surprised me is that what we got seems to be the "mature technology" plateau. you'd think there'd be more coming. the US tried redesigning almost from the ground-up with the OICW program but that didn't really go anywhere.

The single greatest advance in firearm design over the last half century would be, in my opinion, material science. Polymer made guns more durable, cheaper, and lighter. A Glock would probably last forever with minimal maintenance. They are cheap too.
fairly minimal impact compared to the optics. a lot of people don't like the polymer feeling too.
