Now heres a cruiser - how about those goofy secondaries - they didn't pan out well, but this big "cruiser" had a long career.

Cruisers - how are they different from battleships?

Perhaps the ultimate battlecruiser
She was a fine ship according to those who served on her.
These shipyard pictures are some of my favorite kind - I love to see how these ships were put together. Note the new 5.5"/50 guns, an effort to increase the ROF over the 6" type. They were adopted by the Japanese and used in WWII on their early cruisers.Attached FilesLast edited by USSWisconsin; 24 Dec 12,, 22:13.sigpic"If your plan is for one year, plant rice. (So this is what it's like to be Mike Sparks...pretty scary :red: )“He was the most prodigious personification of all human inferiorities. They'd be in open 6" carbon fiber barbettes, served by divers, with 100 mile range sabot rounds and waterproof powder - all twenty of em', L92 stacked M7 mod 666 guns, single mounted on the big 600' span delta wings attached to that second deep hull. And several would be detachable for mounting on the gavins... She'd be a big one all 100,000 tons of her.sigpic"If your plan is for one year, plant rice. If your plan is for ten years, plant trees.

Drifting back to the subject ...
A nice freeboard comparison with a contemporary battleship.
an early example
USN protected cruisers (armored deck, no belt) before the treaties. Cruisers were often larger than battleships.Last edited by USSWisconsin; 30 Dec 12,, 05:47.sigpic"If your plan is for one year, plant rice. If your plan is for ten years, plant trees.

The armored cruiser and predreadnought were replaced by the battlecruiser and dreadnought battleship - the cruisers were typically larger, though the battleships had greater displacement, primarily because of their heavier armor.
the Minotaur is about 50' longer then the Lord Nelsonsigpic"If your plan is for one year, plant rice. If your plan is for ten years, plant trees.
