"Murthy managed to eject with the help of parachute which unfortunately landed on a fireball triggered by the crash of the fighter plane."

    Ooh....that's bad.

        MiG-21 crashes, one pilot killed

        Bangalore , Oct. 26

AN IAF test pilot died today after the MiG-21 trainer crashed at the HAL Airport on Wednesday afternoon, IAF said.

This was the first MiG crash in Bangalore and the first to happen this year. Preliminary assessment speaks of a bird-hit, but a court of inquiry is looking into the exact cause, the IAF spokesman, Wing Commander V.M. Raghunath, said.

Several flights to and from Bangalore were held up between 12.40 p.m. and 3 p.m., sources said. An Air Sahara flight to Delhi took off 10 minutes before the incident from the same runway. Flights of almost all operators were affected, with a flight from Mumbai being diverted to Chennai.

Scores of MiG crashes and pilot deaths have plagued the Air Force in recent years, some of them suspected to be due to technical problems. This comes at a time when the Air Force has been trying hard to reduce them, he said.

The aircraft on a routine sortie lost power soon after take off at 30-50 metres height. Squadron Leader K.R. Murthy, in his early 30s and among the chosen 10 test pilots, and Flight Engineer K.D. Bhat promptly ejected.

"The circumstances of today were against the pilot; the aircraft fell on the southern side of the runway but the winds blowing from the north pushed his parachute into the flames and the pilot got detached from the parachute," he said. The engineer is safe, fine and lucid, he said.

The MiG crashed around 12.45 p.m. and the pilot died in hospital at 1.30 p.m.

I think its just time for india to withdraw the mig-21. They have proven themselves well in combat with the pakistanis and the india/pakistan war is where the mig-21 really shined ( of course in the hands of well-trained indian pilots who brought out every strength of the mig's airframe )

As far as i know, with their new avionics packages they are cabable of killing pakistani F-16s but regardless, those Mig's airframes are dating back from the mid 1960s i think its time to see them go- for the pilot's safetys sake.

It's not that simple. For example a week ago I saw in the news, that only now Albania withdrew the MiG15's, which have been in the service since 50's.
As the difference between the MiG15 and MiG21 is greater, than between MiG21 and F22, then I'm pretty sure that 21's will serve another decade :)

The Mig-21s will get withdrawn as the LCAs start rolling out. This is delayed as the expected roll out was supposed to be a couple of years back.

              Cheers!...on the rocks!!

I know that Indian Air Force don't have a very good maintanence and the planes are getting old, but over pilots are so well trained. But do anyone know that what kinda new planes we have bought or have? Are they any good?

What's the difference between people who pray in church and those who pray in casinos?
The ones in the casinos are serious.
