lol, apparently you haven't met alot of western Liberal types. The Liberals in Canada have virtually dismantled our military and redirected most of the money to social programs. That sort of mentality always pays off for the short term (in terms of votes) but leaves us in a precarious position for the future.

For the record I don't think he was suggesting the Amercian's are doing a fantasic job socially. Infact I think he was suggesting for the amount of money the military is getting a rediculous amount of pork barreling is going on.

And last I heard India's defence spending was 2.5% of its GDP which is quite reasonable. Australia spends about 2.7% and the U.S spends about 4%.

Do you have any idea how ignorant that sounds?

If India wasn't sorrounded by hostile and failed states like pakistan, bangladesh, china etc, maybe India WOULD spend that $70 million on schools and hospitals.

India, unfortunatley doesn't have the comfort of being several thousand miles away from all this hostility.

No, but it's THE most important for a government. Welfare can't fend off invaders and terrorists. Only after the nation is secure should we think about improving people's lives.

In fact, the US constitution mentions nothing about handouts and welfare, not even public education. The federal government is responsible for national defense, foreign treaties, establish a common form of currency, and mail services. Everything else is pretty much left up to the states.

Oh yeah, I remember. Our government wasted too much money because of incompetence at local level. The best thing is all the socialists attacked how poorly the federal government handled the emergency, and their best solution was to expand the government and spend more money?!

The US now spends about 3.5% to 3.7% of GDP on defense, up from 3% before 9-11. Our defense spending during WW2 was around 30% of GDP. In comparison, France and Germany spent around 2% GDP on defense before 9-11. I think their spending is actually DOWN to less than 2% right now because our spending is up. They just want a free ride, as always.

All this kinda news is nothing but bogus, the type thats only meant to fill up newspapers for the sake of it.

Basically, India will always go with Russia. More Mig-29s also means more money to Russia for spares, missiles, radars, etc. - all at a big discount for India

Mig-29s would also be inducted into the Navy. A Mig in every port

There are inherent advantages if India goes with more Russian equipment. Training and logistics problem would be minimal. Switching to French equipment might improve effectiveness of the weapons, but that may be lost due to unfamiliarity. Logicstics might be a problem as well. Need to spend more money to make things fit and work with one another. That hidden cost may offset any advantage gained from using superior equipment.
