I thought he was being a little brazen and careless, but it turns out he was bringing a letter of Iran's response to a letter that Iraq had sent out on behalf of Saudi Arabia in order to ease tensions between the two countries in the region.

Iran seems to be somewhat less capable and lost without him.

When Iranian proxies attacked the embassy in Baghdad. 561 miles and 40 years from the former US Embassy in Tehran. 1979 the year Sullimani joined the Islamic Revolution. I think he had to go. He was very good at his job, His loss it turns out, makes the Iranian security apparatus less effective.

That it damaged Iran is no question. I just wish we were a little better actor with our ally Iraq.

      • We lost three troops today in Jordan. Our troops in Iraq, Syria and Jordan come routinely under fire from Iranian proxy militia or, in the case of Syria IRGC troops operating in support of Assad and the Russians. I'm dismayed by the reticence to talk plainly about the true culprit(s) and call them, simply, enemies of our state. Can't speak for others but, clearly, Iran's mullocracy has had a malign perspective of the west.

They openly loathe all that we aspire while actively working daily to destroy us. Is that a basis for, you know...a working, productive relationship? Any realistic change for the better from them expected anytime soon? I'd gauge, btw, that the recent concerted activity of Iraqi shia militias, Hezbollah, Houthis and HAMAS indicate an Iranian regime VERY comfortable with their sleigh of hand proxy deplicity. As such, Iran anticipates no painful fallout from these operations and feels unfettered. Perhaps immune.

We once actively defended Persian gulf trade during the tanker wars. We actively fought Iranian forces who engaged our ships and planes. I'd let Iran know that every Houthi missile strike on any vessel that didn't radio a request to eat a missile for their target practice will generate a U.S. missile at an Iranian vessel of like type...or the nearest Iranian naval vessel.

In Iranian port facilities if need be. Something is gonna sink though.

        We don't give a fcuk.

        • The Mullah’s are sure busy sticking their fingers; and stirring up trouble in a number of simmering hot spots, around the mid-East!
Funding and supplying Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis, plus who knows how many minor terrorist groups! Firing missiles into neighboring states!
Sure they are facing increased unrest on the domestic front. The recent bombing in southern Iran that killed almost 100 people, is sure symptomatic of that.
The problem with distracting your restless populace, is that sooner or later one of the many pots you stick your finger in, is going to be scalding!
Pissing of the US in an election year, might just be that pot!

          • We've already begun striking Houthi rebels in response to their missile attacks on the Red Sea adjacent shipping lanes, though the deaths of US service members certainly have raised the stakes. Are we expecting an Operation Praying Mantis Part Deux?

            • USS Gravely had to use her CIWS to down an incoming missile.

This shit's getting a little too hot for comfort.

Only thing I can think of is 'had' to use its CWIS vs 'chose' to use it? Pretty ballsy if it was 'chose to' though unless of course there was some reason to believe Gravely wasn't the intended target.

No way of knowing, but it's certainly possible that Gravely took a snap shot at a passing missile.

If I had to put money on it though, I'd bet it was aimed squarely at Gravely and somehow it got through nearly all of her layered defenses.

                      • U.S. destroys Houthi drones, ground control station in Yemen

The United States early Thursday conducted another strike into Yemen, destroying Houthi drones and a drone control center.

Jan. 31 (UPI) -- The United States destroyed Houthi drones and a drone ground control station in strikes in Yemen early Thursday, as the U.S. military continues to target the Iran proxy militia's capabilities of attacking merchant and U.S. Navy vessels transiting the Red Sea.

U.S. Central Command said in a statement that it conducted the strikes at 1:30 a.m. local time after it had identified the locations of the targets in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen "and determined that they presented an imminent threat to merchant vessels and the U.S. Navy ships in the region."

"U.S. Forces subsequently struck and destroyed the UAV ground control station and 10 one-way attack UAVs in self-defense," CENTCOM said. "This action will protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S. Navy vessels and merchant vessels."

The strike is the latest in some dozen the U.S. military has conducted against the Iran proxy militia since Jan. 11, as it attempts to deter the Houthis from its continuous assaults of shipping vessels transiting the Red Sea.

The Houthis have vowed to attack commercial vessels as well as British and U.S. warships amid Israel's war against Hamas, another Iran-backed militia, stating it stands in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Hours earlier, at about 9:10 p.m. Wednesday, the Arleigh Burke-class USS Carney destroyer shot down three Iranian UAVs, which followed it shooting down a Houthi-fired anti-ship missile in the Gulf of Aden about 40 minutes earlier, CENTCOM said in a statement.

The Houthis have launched more than 30 attacks at merchant vessels, one of which it has hijacked in the all-important trade route of the Red Sea. The attacks have prompted about 15 shipping companies to reroute vessels to avoid the violence.

The Biden administration has pledged to retaliate against attacks on the shipping lane, which is responsible for between 10% and 15% of global trade, but has repeatedly said it is not seeking an escalation to the conflict.

                        • US begins strikes on militias in Iraq, Syria, retaliating for fatal drone attack, officials tell AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. military launched an air assault on dozens of sites in Iraq and Syria used by Iranian-backed militias Friday, in the opening salvo of retaliation for the drone strike that killed three U.S. troops in Jordan last weekend, officials told The Associated Press.

President Joe Biden and other top U.S. leaders have been warning for days that the U.S. would strike back at the militias, and they made it clear that it wouldn’t be just one hit, but would be a “tiered response” over time. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss military operations not yet made public.

The initial strikes by manned and unmanned aircraft were hitting command and control headquarters, ammunition storage and other facilities. And they came just hours after Biden and top defense leaders joined grieving families to watch as the remains of the three Army Reserve soldiers were returned to the U.S. at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

It was unclear what the next steps will be, or whether the days of U.S. warnings have sent militia members scattering into hiding, making it more difficult for the U.S. to detect and strike them. But it was evident that the recent statement released by Kataeb Hezbollah, one of the main Iran-backed militias, saying it was suspending attacks on American troops had no impact on the administration’s plans to strike back.

The U.S. strikes also appeared to stop short of directly targeting Iran or its Revolutionary Guard Quds force. Iran has denied it was behind the Jordan strike.
