  • Somali American Jihadists

This seems to be a new phenomenon, at least to me.

US members of Somalia extremists urge recruitment

16 hrs ago WASHINGTON (AFP) — American recruits of Somali extremists addressed a press conference in the conflict-wracked country this week to rally other youths to join their jihad (holy war), a US monitoring group said Friday.

On April 5, "two American members of the Mujahideen Youth Movement (MYM) identified as Abu-Muslim and Abu Yaxye" spoke at the news conference and acknowledged that "many" Somali-Americans are "all over Somalia to join the jihad," said the SITE Intelligence Group.

The pair said they are "Somali youth" from the United States and are stationed near the southern port of Kismayo.

"Some of us are still in training, others are on the frontline of the jihad. Sadly a few of us are dead, one of whom carried out a suicide bombing," said Abu Muslim, as translated by Omar Jamal, executive director of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.

"We came from the US with a good life and a good education, but we came to fight alongside our brothers of (militant youth Islamic group) Shebab ... to be killed for the sake of God," one of the pair said, according to SITE.

Last month the Federal Bureau of Investigation warned US lawmakers that "radicalized clusters" of Somali-American youths as young as 12 were being recruited by Islamic terror groups.

"This is a priority for the FBI," Philip Mudd, an official with the bureau's national security branch, told a Senate committee hearing. . ...

Mudd identified the Shebab group as the driving force behind the recruitment effort, and said it also has ties to Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network.

The Somali community in the United States numbers about 150,000 to 200,000, according to the FBI, and is centered largely on Minneapolis, Minnesota.

At the end of March SITE also made public a propaganda video made by Islamic extremists in Somalia featuring appeals to foreign recruits from an "American" fighter along with English rapping and songs. ....

This news below is a few weeks old. I bring it up again to highlighit the heating up of Somalia.

Purported bin Laden tape urges Somalis to overthrow new president

Mar 19, 2009 An audiotape purported to be from al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is urging Somali militants to overthrow the country's new president.

The authenticity of the 11½-minute tape, which was posted to a militant Islamic web forum on Thursday, cannot be confirmed.

Titled "Fight on, champions of Somalia," the tape features a voice urging militants to overthrow President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed, a moderate elected earlier this year. ....

U.S. intelligence analysts have warned al-Qaeda is gaining a foothold in Somalia, which has been plagued by violence and anarchy since warlords overthrew dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991 and then turned on one another. The current government was formed as a transitional administration with UN help in 2004.

The new president has struggled to isolate hardline militants believed linked to al-Qaeda who have vowed to fight against the government until Islamic law rules the country.

Ahmed "must be dethroned and fought," bin Laden said, adding that militants are obliged to "continue fighting the apostate government."

"The war which has been taking place on your soil these past years is a war between Islam and the international crusade."...

Those guys lived five blocks away from me. I'm glad they're doing whatever it is they plan over there than over here.

The jihad may be local jihad, but it may also be global jihad against US.

On the other hand, there is a danger in sterotyping. Only some of them get so angry and get themselves converted and trained to be jihadists.

Try sterotyping all 1 billion Muslims.

I'm afraid I don't follow you. I wasn't stereotyping anybody. These specific individuals lived five blocks from me across the river, in the Riverside Plaza building in Minneapolis. I'm glad whatever it is they're doing, they're doing it four thousand miles away.

I take it you have some Somali living five blocks from you.

I was trying to make two points here.

Firstly they are likely to be ordinary Somali studying or working here with no bad intentions. Thus one should not stereotype to regard them as jihadists. Very often it is precisely these wrong stereotyping that make some of them very angry.

And if some of them are converted jihadist, the violent activies they are getting ready for may not just be in Somalia. These violent activities may also be global jihads targetting US and its interests.

(By the way, I don't normally write long elaborations as my English writing is slow going.)

I'm afraid you misunderstood me again. These individuals who traveled to Somalia for the purpose of carrying out their "jihad" lived just across the river. I'm not referring to Muslims or Somalis in general, rather I'm referring to the specific individuals the article is referring to.

The Somalis that the article is referring to, including Shirwa Ahmed, who carried out the October 29th suicide bombing, Abu-Muslim and Abu Yaxye from the tape, Burhan Hassan, and the rest of them lived just across the river. I'm referring to them. I'm not stereotyping anybody as "jihadists" or speaking in general terms.

I understand that these men may be seeking to carry out acts outside of Somalia. Fortunately for us, the FBI knows who they all are and it's very unlikely they will be able to re-enter the US without being arrested. I hope they reach the end of their journey in Somalia.
