Syria will be a mess. There will be no post-war anymore than what's currently described as a civil war. It's, instead, a free-for-all barroom brawl. Battles have already broken out between Islamist and Jihadist (Salafi) factions. That PoG is in the mix is altogether unsurprising. Nasrallah clinging to some vestige of separation is laughable but for the lethality of his humor.

Sir,I agree, but only in part.Yes,I also believe it will be a mess and the next civil war will be between islamists. However,it's a pattern seen everywhere.Every revolution has more revolutionaries than privileged positions to offer. Thus civil wars, purges, reigns of terror and the likes. The big thing is after that phase. When the biggest bastard wins the game internally.Him,being the smartest of the bunch, first and foremost consolidates the country. After that,he goes into tourism bussiness. With many fellow tourists, all of them dressed the same and carrying guns.

Indeed. In a way it reminds me of the early medieval period when Islamic, Sassanian, and Byzantine forces were all vying for control of Syria. It was a neverending continuum of field engagements, sieges, and slaughter.

Do you forsee a situation like Lebanon in the 70s & 80s with a more or less permenant war dragging on for years wiht shifting alliances & outside powers increasingly dragged into the fight?

          • Pete,

I do- multi-factional but much more dangerous. I unfortunately see that scenario in the interest of a number of regional players.

            • I know it is a matter of time, but shouldn't Assad be gone first, then 'liberators' to split the spoils of war?

                  • Im really curious to see what this will mean to Russia's presence post this conflict. Can you imagine these Islamists honoring contracts made by Asaad and Russia? Russia is better advised to cut its losses and run here, it will find itself in a similar position the US was after 1979.

If Assad is comprehensively defeated Russia may find itself locked out of Syria....but nothing is certain. It depends on who lands in charge & what they do after that. There are, however, quite a few nations with either the weapons, money or both to step into Russia's shoes. Russia has had some preliminary talks with representitives of one of the main rebel groups, but that means not a lot right now.\

If, however, this ends up as a running civil war then Russia is still 'in the game'. Imagine a scenario like Lebanon of days past. Perhaps rebels grab control of Damascus, Aleppo & most of Syria with some sort of Alawite enclave backed by Iran, Russia & Hezbollah. All speculation of course, but by no means impossible.

                              • I'm probably going to be lambasted for this post of mine but I've got this very strong opinion of the Middle East (less Israel) in general: if they are not fighting someone else, they are fighting each other.

International support is not going to do shit, sooner or later they are going to kill each other again over something. It's as though.. how do I phrase it appropriately.. culture?
