You guys are forgetting that ISIS was carefully nurtured by Assad just so you will say, wow, the alternative is a lot worse than Assad. Plan worked just about perfectly.
The mistake was not getting rid of Assad or not getting rid of him. The mistake was not being able to decide then going half way on both, and Obama owns that mistake 100%
This whole idea of you break it you owe it need to be buried 10 ft deep in concrete. It's proven foolish and paralyzing.
Putin has the right idea: I broke it, now you're fucked. Bye. If you want to be unfucked, offer me concessions.

firestorm,
Didn't they spend $500 million trying to train "moderate rebels" to take him down? So you failed to remove him and now that it is obvious that the ones who would have replaced him are far worse you're saying that you weren't really trying.
the US wanted Assad gone, but NOT at the cost of ISIS taking over the place. so, the former was never a priority, especially after ISIS established its dominance over Raqqa. There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "My ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."- Isaac Asimov

Erdogan's participation in the Syrian civil war becomes more obvious. Italian law enforcement authorities "leaked" a number of facts from their investigation in the criminal case against Bilal Erdogan. He is accused of money laundering received in a criminal way. Installed organized with his participation transit routes to smuggle contraband of hydrocarbons from the Turkish port of Mersin in the Lebanese port Beirut.
The scheme is implemented through the company HODICO S. a.l., controlled by the son of the President of the Republic of Turkey B. Erdogan, and partners in the Republic of Lebanon - Mikati clan headed by Najib Mikati. Bilal proxy juneid Zapsu Hasan (Hasan Cuneyd Zapsu) became a major shareholder of the port of Mersin.
Part of transit of oil, including Iraqi Kurdistan, is held through the company TÜPRAŞ, the largest shareholder of which is also listed B. Erdogan. The company is the operator of several oil refineries in Turkey, including businesses in Kirikkale.
Derived from those activities, money is transferred to account B. Erdogan and his wife Revan in BANК HALK banks in Bahrain and HSBC Turkey in North Cyprus. Cashing money deals confidant – a gökhan Cantanghel (Gokhan Kantarcigil) in the Bank WUA-AМRO in Amsterdam (the Netherlands).
Italian authorities consider that this indicates very serious interest of the family of the President of Turkey in maintaining the armed conflict in Syria, until the division of the country into several independent States. Most importantly for the Family - Ankara control over the main transport hubs in the Syrian Arab Republic.
The opinion of the Italians parts of independent consulting company Energy Rusted, in its opinion, prove the complicity of the family of Recep Tayyip erdoğan to illegal transit of oil, including from the territories controlled by terrorists "Islamic state".

Time to send couple of Stingers shipment to FSA to balance the field.

IS Destroys Aircraft at Russian Base in Syria
"Burning of four Russian attack helicopters and 20 trucks loaded with missiles inside T4 airport in eastern Homs [province] as a result of a nearby fire," it said in an urgent report, leading to speculation that it could have been accidental.
On the same day, IS released an image it said showed one of its fighters firing Grad rockets at T4, also known as Tiyas.

Looks like the Russians had their own "Camp Bastion" moment.
That's gotta be the worst feeling in the world, watching lethal combat aircraft being destroyed so easily, like so many toys kicked around by a child.“He was the most prodigious personification of all human inferiorities. He was an utterly incapable, unadapted, irresponsible, psychopathic personality, full of empty, infantile fantasies, but cursed with the keen intuition of a rat or a guttersnipe. He represented the shadow, the inferior part of everybody’s personality, in an overwhelming degree, and this was another reason why they fell for him.”
