Nashville police release image of vehicle that exploded on Christmas Day

Nashville police have released a photo of the vehicle that exploded in Downtown Nashville early on Christmas Day.

Posting a still to Twitter, Metro Nashville Police Department asked residents to come forward if they have any information regarding the vehicle, writing, “Please contact us via Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463 or online via http://fbi.gov/nashville.”

According to police, who were initially responding to a call of shots fired around 5:30 AM CT, the recreational vehicle arrived on the street at 1:22 AM CT. It was parked in front of an AT&T transmission building at 166 2nd Avenue North, and, upon discovery a few hours later, police said the it was playing a recorded message that a bomb would explode in 15 minutes.

At that point, officers requested assistance from the department's hazardous devices unit and began evacuating the area.

At 6:30 AM CT, the vehicle exploded. "We do believe this to have been an intentional act," police spokesperson Don Aaron said during a news conference on Friday. "Significant damage has been done to the infrastructure there on 2nd Avenue North."

Three people were injured and taken to the hospital from the scene, but no one was in critical condition, according to Nashville Fire spokesman Josep Pleasant.

An eyewitness living near the scene told CNN, "Everything on the street was on fire. There were three cars that were fully engulfed."

The FBI has now taken over the investigation and asked in Friday's news conference that anyone with any information related to the explosion please come forward. There is currently no information around whether anyone was inside the vehicle at the time of the explosion.

FBI at home of possible person of interest in Nashville bomb

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Federal agents converged Saturday on the home of a possible person of interest in the explosion that rocked downtown Nashville as investigators scoured hundreds of tips and leads in the blast that pulverized city blocks on Christmas morning and damaged dozens of buildings.

More than 24 hours after the explosion, a motive remained elusive as investigators worked round-the-clock to resolve unanswered questions about the mysterious blast, which took place on a mostly deserted street on a sleepy holiday morning and was prefaced by a recorded warning advising those nearby to evacuate.

Still, there were signs of progress in the investigation, as the FBI revealed that it was looking at a number of individuals who may be connected to the investigation. Officials also said no additional explosive devices have been found — indicating no active threat to the area. Investigators have received around 500 tips and leads.

“It’s just going to take us some time,” Douglas Korneski, the special agent in charge in charge of the FBI's Memphis field office, said at a Saturday afternoon news conference. “Our investigative team is turning over every stone” to understand who did this and why.

Around the same time, investigators from multiple federal and local law enforcement agencies were at a home in Antioch, in suburban Nashville, after receiving information relevant to the investigation, said FBI Special Agent Jason Pack. Another law enforcement official, who was not authorized to discuss an ongoing investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, said investigators regard a person associated with the property as a person of interest.

Federal agents could be seen looking around the property, searching the home and the backyard. A Google Maps image had shown a similar recreational vehicle parked in the backyard when the photo was captured in May 2019; an AP reporter at the scene did not see the vehicle at the property in the late afternoon Saturday.

Separately, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said in a report Saturday that tissue samples found at the scene were determined to be human remains. Officials said they were working vigorously to identify whom the remains belong to.

But questions endured about the mysterious circumstances of the explosion, which officials said injured three people after a bomb detonated inside a recreational vehicle. If the goal was to harm an untold number of citizens, then why did the explosive go off so early in the morning before streets were bustling with activity and why did a pre-recorded warning from the RV announce that a bomb would detonate in 15 minutes? And if the goal wasn't human destruction, then what was it?

The attack continued to wreak havoc on communications systems across the state. Police emergency systems in Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama, as well as Nashville’s COVID-19 community hotline and a handful of hospital systems, remained out of service due to an AT&T central office being affected by the blast.

The building contained a telephone exchange, with network equipment in it — but the company has declined to say exactly how many people have been impacted.

Asked whether the AT&T building could have been a possible target, Korneski said, "We're looking at every possible motive that could be involved.

Investigators shut down the heart of downtown Nashville’s tourist scene - an area packed with honky-tonks, restaurants and shops - as they shuffled through broken glass and damaged buildings to learn more about the explosion.

Mayor John Cooper has enforced a curfew in the downtown area until Sunday via executive order to limit public access to the area. More than 40 buildings were affected.

AT&T said restoration efforts are facing several challenges, which include a fire that “reignited overnight and led to the evacuation of the building.” This has forced their teams to work with safety and structural engineers and drilling access holes into the building in order to reconnect power.

“Our teams continue to work around the clock on recovery efforts from yesterday morning’s explosion in Nashville,” the company said in a Saturday statement. “We have two portable cell sites operating in downtown Nashville with numerous additional portable sites being deployed in the Nashville area and in the region.”

Ray Neville, president of technology at T-Mobile, said on Twitter that service disruptions affected Louisville, Nashville, Knoxville, Birmingham and Atlanta. “We continue to see service interruptions in these areas following yesterday’s explosion. Restoration efforts continue around the clock & we will keep you updated on progress,” he said in a tweet Saturday.

The outages had even briefly grounded flights at the Nashville International Airport, but service was continuing normally as of Saturday. The Federal Aviation Association has since issued a temporary flight restriction around the airport, requiring pilots to follow strict procedures until Dec. 30.

According to Metro Nashville Police Chief John Drake, police officers responded on Friday to a report of shots fired when they encountered the RV blaring a recorded warning that a bomb would detonate in 15 minutes. Police evacuated nearby buildings and called in the bomb squad. The RV exploded shortly afterward.

Nashville blast: officials identify Anthony Warner as the bomber

Authorities in Tennessee on Sunday named a 63-year-old Nashville resident as the perpetrator of the Christmas morning bombing that injured three people and destroyed sections of the city’s historic downtown.

Anthony Quinn Warner, an information technology contractor from the south eastern suburb of Antioch, instigated and was killed in the explosion, according to law enforcement sources at an evening press briefing.

“Warner is the bomber,” Don Cochran, US attorney for the middle district of Tennessee, said. “He was present when the bomb went off, and he perished in the bombing.”

Investigators matched DNA from human tissue found at the site to samples collected from a vehicle used by Warner, according to David Rausch, director of the Tennessee bureau of investigation.

Additional identification was made possible from clues found at the scene of Friday’s explosion, which took place at a facility owned by the telecommunications company AT&T, and which knocked out or impaired mobile phone services in several other cities.

Douglas Korneski, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Memphis field office, said a vehicle identification number found in the wreckage was from an RV motorhome that was used as a mobile bomb, and was registered to Warner.

“There is no indication that any other persons were involved,” Korneski said. “We reviewed hours of security video surrounding the recreational vehicle, we saw no other people involved.”

Warner had earlier Sunday been named as a person of interest into the explosion that took place outside a facility owned by the telecommunications company AT&T and which knocked out or impaired mobile phone services in several other cities.

Agents from the FBI and the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives (ATF) have spent the weekend searching the home of Warner, who once owned a company specializing in burglar alarms.

Teams of investigators continue to comb the site of the bombing on Sunday for clues and a curfew in the center of the city was extended.

Earlier a Nashville television news channel reported that Warner worked as an IT consultant for a real estate company, Fridrich and Clark.

Steve Fridrich, a realtor who contacted the FBI after hearing the man’s name on a news bulletin, told WSMV that federal agents had asked him if Warner had a paranoia about 5G technology.

Promoted by the rightwing cult movement QAnon, among others, the conspiracy theory makes wild claims about 5G, the next generation technology that delivers high speed internet access to mobile phone networks. As well as believing 5G is a spying tool of the deep state, theorists claim the technology causes cancer and helps spread coronavirus.

Research by The Tennessean newspaper, meanwhile, revealed that Warner registered as the owner of the business Custom Alarms and Electronics in 1993, and was involved in a recently settled legal dispute with his family over property ownership.

“[He was] kind of low key to the point of, I don’t know, I guess some people would say he’s a little odd. He was kind of a computer geek that worked at home,” Warner’s next-door neighbor, Steve Schmoldt, told the newspaper.

Earlier on Sunday, the mayor of Nashville appeared to indicate that the 5G conspiracy theory could be relevant to the investigation. “To all of us locally, it feels like there has to be some connection with the AT&T facility and the site of the bombing,” John Cooper said on CBS’ Face the Nation. “That’s just local insight, because it’s got to have something to do with the infrastructure.”

Cooper has been liaising closely with federal and local law enforcement agencies conducting the investigation, and also the Republican Tennessee governor Bill Lee, who has asked Donald Trump for a federal disaster declaration.

The president, meanwhile, was playing golf in Florida on Sunday and the White House had not responded to Lee’s request.

Officers describe arriving at the scene
The blast occurred early on Christmas morning as police officers, called to the scene by reports of gunshots, attempted to evacuate local residents. A sinister recording blaring from the RV featuring a woman’s voice, interspersed with snippets of music, warned that an explosion was imminent.

Two officers suffered non life-threatening injuries as the blast sent black smoke and flames billowing from the heart of downtown Nashville’s central tourist district.

Several of the officers who attended the incident spoke at an emotional press conference on Sunday. James Wells, who suffered hearing loss in the blast, broke down in tears as he recalled the events of the morning.

“I just see orange and then I hear a loud boom. As I’m stumbling, I just tell myself to stay on my feet and stay alive,” Wells said, adding that he believed he heard God tell him to walk away moments before the explosion.

“This is going to tie us together forever for the rest of my life. Christmas will never be the same.”

Fellow officer Amanda Topping said she initially parked her police cruiser beside the RV before moving it after hearing the recording. Topping said she called her wife to say “things were just really strange” as she moved people away from the vehicle.

She said she heard the announcement switch to a recording of Petula Clark’s 1964 hit Downtown, and moments later the RV exploded. “I felt the waves of heat but I just kind of lost it and started sprinting toward [Wells],” she said. “I’ve never grabbed someone so hard in my life.”

Civil and emergency communications networks in Nashville and several other cities, including Louisville, Knoxville, Birmingham and Atlanta, were affected.

AT&T said Sunday it was rerouting service to other facilities as the company worked to restore its heavily damaged building. The company said in a statement that it was bringing in resources to help recover affected voice and data services and expects to have 24 additional trailers of disaster recovery equipment at the site by the end of the day.

Cooper signed a civil emergency declaration for areas of Nashville affected by the explosion, including a curfew.

Why warn people that bomb will explode in 15 mins? It seems to be a case of peculiar suicide. Maybe he had some score to settle with AT&T.

No one of the officers who were there minutes during countdown around the vehicle have reported to had seen or heard human presence inside: youtu.be/hMngGFtqFcM. If Anthony was really in the vehicle, he might have been already dead for unknown reason, as there is yet no clarity for the blast motivation, apart from the facts about AT&T and etc.

Maybe. Or he just wanted some attention when he cashed in.

Too early to do anything but speculate wildly.

Nashville bomber claimed to have cancer and began giving away his possessions shortly before attack

The man responsible for the bomb attack which ripped through Nashville on Christmas Day had told acquaintances he had cancer and began giving away his possessions shortly before the attack, according to reports.

Police on Sunday night named Anthony Quinn Warner, 63, as the man responsible for the bomb. Warner was killed in the blast and identified after police used DNA found on the scene to confirm his identity.

It was matched with samples found on the motorhome which exploded injuring three people and damaging dozens of businesses. The vehicle was also registered to Warner.

Warner, an unmarried IT specialist, had announced his retirement three weeks before the attack, his colleagues told the New York Times.

The 63-year-old had also told an ex-girlfriend that he had cancer and given her his car, according to the newspaper.

Records show that Warner had also signed away his home the day before Thanksgiving on November 26.

Detectives said they were still investigating the motive behind the suicide bomb attack. One line of inquiry is thought to be whether it was triggered by paranoia over 5G technology.

The motorhome was parked close to a building owned by telecommunications giant, AT&T.

“All of us locally feel like there has to be some connection," Nashville's mayor, John Cooper, told CBS's Face the Nation.

The explosion in the heart of America's country music capital disrupted mobile, internet and TV services across central Tennessee and parts of four other states as well as grounding flights at Nashville Airport.

Damage to the AT&T switching center was so extensive that the communications company had to drill access holes into the wreckage to connect generators to critical equipment, as well as pump three feet of water from the basement. The company said it had made "significant progress" in restoring its services.

Detectives in Nashville said they were still following up on hundreds of tips from members of the public. Warner's home in nearby Antioch was searched by FBI agents over the weekend as well as a Nashville real estate agency where he had worked on computers.

Estate agent Steve Fridrich, said Warner had been contracted as an IT consultant for his company for about five years. But earlier this month Warner emailed him to say he would be retiring.

“He’s a nice guy, and this seems uncharacteristic of the Tony we know,” Mr Fridrich told the New York Times. “He was very professional and knew his stuff.”

The estate agent said he was asked by police whether Warner had expressed any views about the conspiracy theory that 5G technology was being used to spy on ordinary Americans. Mr Fridrich, one of 500 people who contacted the authorities, said he had not.

Another more prosaic explanation could be linked to a family connection to the telecommunications giant. US outlets reported that Warner’s father had worked for BellSouth, a communications firm which was bought out by AT&T.

Detectives in Nashville said they were still following up on hundreds of tips from members of the public.

Warner's home in nearby Antioch was searched by FBI agents over the weekend as well as a Nashville real estate agency where he had worked on computers.

Seems again they spread 'calm the public' version, as usual. While the play of Petula Clark’s 1964 „Downtown“ hit during the countdown in Downtown Nashville suggests the organizers did it also for fun. Showing they are quite professional though by providing twice as much time of what was being announced for evacuation: youtu.be/CaiXEiZU6lM. Apparently with no intentions to hurt anyone, the loud gunshots in the very beginning were made to get people's attention
