    Dear god...
“He was the most prodigious personification of all human inferiorities. He was an utterly incapable, unadapted, irresponsible, psychopathic personality, full of empty, infantile fantasies, but cursed with the keen intuition of a rat or a guttersnipe. He represented the shadow, the inferior part of everybody’s personality, in an overwhelming degree, and this was another reason why they fell for him.”

    • It's been claimed it was either filled with Shaheed drones, or at least used to transport them in the past.

      • Russia "confirms damage" to Novocherkassk.

        https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-67821515

Both Russians and Ukrainians claim that it was aircraft firing guided missiles that hit the Novocherkassk.

I think it's safe to say, she's dead, Jim. Nothing but a twisted pile of floating scrap metal. While the Minsk looks to have been functionally destroyed (Russians claim it will be repaired, doubtful), the Novocherkassk attack looks to have had much more... complete results.

That fire ball is ammunition cooking off. Notice the smoke trails and continued low order explosions after the big fire ball. Those munitions are what tore that ship apart. And the Soviets/Russians are notorious of having all kinds of munitions on deck.

            That won't rub out.

And now it can join the formation with the Moskva!

            • Surprised those buildings aren't heavily scorched or otherwise damaged.

              • Out of curiosity how many active LSTs does that leave Russia with in the Black Sea?

5...allegedly. Although considering how little they actually sortie, I don't know if that matters one way or another

Well the Ukis need to keep whittling them down. That and any civie transports being used by the Russians for military cargo transfers to Crimea.

                    • Here's the best quality photo I've been able to find.

Below the second quay crane from the left, there are a row of windows from what was the superstructure. I think that's where the bridge was.

                      • It would have to have sucked to be a crane operator doing a late night shift when she went up.

But then again Moscow claims only one person was killed when she was hit and that the Novocherkassk was only 'damaged'. So I'm sure it will all be fine and she'll be re-floated in no time

I think 6 are operational in the BSF, with another 3 currently non-operational - 2 of which were due to damage inflicted by Ukraine. The Russians reinforced the BSF with another six Ropucha-class ships around 9 Feb 22, in addition to the five already assigned to the BSF, just before the full-scale invasion and subsequent closure of the Turkish Straits to warships.

This is the current list of Ropucha-class landing ships in the Black Sea. 10 were operational on 22 Feb 22, with an 11th (seized from Ukraine in 2014) never having been made operational after its seizure and induction into the Russian Navy.
                          • Korolev
                          • Minsk (damaged, likely functionally destroyed 13 Sept 23 at Sevastopol)
                          • Kaliningrad
                          • Pyotr Morgunov
                          • Georgy Pobedonosets
                          • Olenegorsky Gornyak (damaged 4 Aug 23 at Novorossiysk, non-operational)
                          • Azov
                          • Caesar Kunikov (damaged 24 Mar 22 at Berdiansk, non-operational)
                          • Yamal
                          • Novocherkassk (damaged 24 Mar 22 at Berdiansk, destroyed 26 Dec 23 at Feodosia)
                          • Konstantin Olshansky (seized from Ukraine 2014, not operational since)
Then there are also the Alligator-class LSTs:
                          • Saratov (destroyed 24 Mar 22 at Berdiansk)
                          • Orsk (active)

                            • Not to digress from discussions of Russia's latest naval faux pas but this was TOO MUCH. Over-the-top fun. 1420 always does a great job but, this...This was next level excellence.
