  • Ilyas Kashmiri killed in US drone strike in Pak: Report

ISLAMABAD: Al-Qaida-linked terrorist Ilyas Kashmiri, a key suspect in the Mumbai attacks, was among nine militants killed in a US drone strike, BBC Urdu reported on Saturday, quoting residents of South Waziristan tribal region.

The US drones targeted a location 20 km from Wana, one of the main towns in South Waziristan late last night.

A drone fired two missiles at the spot and two more missiles were fired after a short interval, local residents were quoted as saying by BBC Urdu.

The local residents said Kashmiri was among the nine militants killed in the drone strike.

Three others were injured in the attack. A government official in Peshawar confirmed the drone strike to BBC but said there was no confirmation of Kashmiri's death.

Other officials said all the dead militants were Punjabi Taliban.

The report said Kashmiri came to Wana from the Khyber tribal region 10 days ago and moved to the area where the drone strike was carried out last night.

Asked by media persons in Multan about reports of Kashmiri's death in the drone strike, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said, "I do not have any information now."

Post Operation Nepture Spear, US it seems has done some serious back channel dialogue with powers-that be within Pakistan's Administration and this seems to be a direct result of that

Capture Kashmiri, Mullah Omar by July: US warns Pak

ISLAMABAD: The US has given Pakistan a deadline till July to launch a military offensive in the restive North Waziristan tribal region for capturing five most wanted al-Qaida and Taliban terrorists, including Ayman al-Zawahiri, Mullah Omar and Ilyas Kashmiri.
Pakistani security forces have been asked to capture al-Zawahiri, Omar, Kashmiri, Sirajuddin Haqqani and Atia Abdur Rehman either in a unilateral or joint military action within the deadline till July -- the month when NATO and allied forces will begin withdrawing from neighbouring Afghanistan.
The US demand has set alarm bells ringing in Pakistani civil and military circles, The News daily reported on Wednesday quoting unnamed sources.

Pakistan's security forces had so far shown reluctance in launching a military offensive in North Waziristan despite sustained pressure from the US to do so.
The Haqqani militant network, based in North Waziristan, "had not been any threat to Pakistan" and has served as "a vital contact between the Pakistani intelligence agencies and the Afghan Taliban," the report said.
Another factor for the Pakistani military's reluctance to move into North Waziristan is the presence of "some very important pro-government" militant factions, including those led by Mullah Nazir and Hafiz Gul Bahadar.
These groups have "helped the Pakistani security forces keep the anti-government tribal fighters, including the Wazirs, at bay", the report said.

Gents, is it usual for Harkat-ul Jehad-al Islami to admit to one of their own being killed?

I'm holding my breath on this one. TTP has denied Ilyas Kashmiri's killing. As for a so-called "offensive" I'll also reserve the right to remain dubious there as well. The Peshawar-based 11th Corps commander has denied any orders or operational planning towards such.

Now...I doubt the latter unless their operational planning cells are completely inactivated or incompetent as planning contingent ops are what operations departments do. Still, whether these are acted upon remains questionable given a decade-long history of obfuscation, stall and outright lying.

Let's not forget that for the vast majority of that time these azzpipes have refused to even acknowledge the presence of the afghan taliban and their Haqqani associates upon their lands. Many still, like A.M., deny such.

Don't know how true the reports are but on tv, the Indian media is talking much about the Haqqani network allegedly shifting base from North Waziristan to the Khurram Agency.

TTP has a habit of denying every positive, only to come out later and vowing revenge for the same thing they denied ever happening. Granted they did get a PR coup when Hakimullah Mehsud was reported killed for sure and then he just came out with a video. Although since then he has opted to remain out of the limelight. Pretty much the underlying reason why most Pakistanis are interested in seeing Osama's blown up face and get suspicious when things like quick burial and not hurting sentiments are used as reasoning.

This so called NWA operation will face a lot of opposition in Pakistan. People are not ready to see any more casualties on a massive scale as was the case with the quite successful Rah-e-rast and Rah-e-Nijat operations. However it left a bad taste after the end of it all given that the Army cleared TTP strongholds only to create a bigger population pissed off at the country.

The new joint task force formed should be used to keep public opinion in favor of this move and soldiers should be sent in take out the known bad guys and then come out. Any move the employs air strikes, artillery shelling and hellfires on villages will lose the favor of the public very quickly. In short Operation Geronimo type of ops will be appreciated by Pakistanis through a joint task force. A lot more than hell-fires.

Disagree. Those are afghan taliban insurgents on your lands. If there's fighting on the ground for any sustained period it should be your troops and nothing but your troops. If we've got clear intel on J or S. Haqqani and can't reach them via drone we're likely going after them again...alone.

If we couldn't trust Pakistan with OBL we sure as hell won't trust them with the Haqqani leadership. There's too much history suggesting they've been in your pocket.

I've seen you screaming elsewhere about these raids across your border lately. Got all the local folks excited. Let me be clear-the U.S. has NEVER demanded you SEAL your borders. We know the terrain is immensely difficult and these guys are good and determined guerrillas fighting largely on ground they understand very, very well.

Finally, it's a war and nothing is guaranteed. The other side plays to win also...and they occasionally shall.

That said, however, we've always insisted that we make NO DISTINCTION between good and bad taliban. Nor should Pakistan. That clearly hasn't been the case.

All we've asked is that you treat your so-called precious sovereignty with the same respect when it comes to afghan insurgents as you've done when railing about U.S. drones. Had you made war upon those afghan insurgents long encamped upon your lands our drones would be utterly unnecessary. Nonetheless we've not seen any effort whatsoever against the afghan taliban leadership, much less one made in good faith and determination.

Your troops have fought with great courage and distinction since April 2009 against the TTP. Understandable as they've proven a scourge upon your lands. It's too bad, though, that your public, military and government seem eager to preserve the afghan taliban to do to the afghan people what you clearly won't seen done to your own.

                      For shame.

This buger was rewarded by Musharraf when he took the head of an Indian soldier back after a raid.

In February 2000, Kashmiri led a group of over two dozen terrorists to raid an Indian Army post, and he took back the head of one of the Indian soldiers. Pakistani reports of the time said he was rewarded by General Pervez Musharraf for the operation.

The attack on February 27, 2000, took place under the cover of heavy exchange of fire that was a routine those days, since the ceasefire along LoC was not yet in place. The raid ended in the death of seven Indian soldiers, and Kashmiri taking back the head of 24-year-old Sepoy Bhausaheb Maruti Talekar of the 17 Maratha Light Infantry (MLI). Talekar was among those on duty at the Ashok Post. Kashmiri is believed to have been honoured by General Pervez Musharraf, then military dictator, himself for the operation.

First time I read the name of the soldier. Read about this head thingy long back and I knew this scum became a hero in Pakistan after that.

What did you really expect making alliances with the most rotten people in Pakistan? The US has never sought to win the favor of the Pakistani people and heck as much as you are displeased over that, I'm more. Pay them some more and they might just do it, perhaps you haven't bribed them enough.

Are you seriously going to hate on Pakistan because ZARDARI, freakin ZARDARI wasn't honest with you?

Strategic depth makes sense to no one in Pakistan. It was something tried out between 1995 to 2001, no one in Pakistan is seriously married to the idea today. Why don't they do it? I have no idea, it makes no sense other than that you haven't paid them enough. By that I mean BRIBE... put money in their personal accounts type of thing.

Your approach is wrong. You aren't trying to end terrorism, just win this war. When you go home, all the damage you did to Taliban and other terrorist groups will be undone because others will take over their place.

Think about it, you haven't done squat against the extremist ideology, nor have Pakistanis. Since day one its all been about firing bullets. In the meantime you've killed the dads of a lot of kids who will ultimately grow up hating on the killers of their dads. Doesn't that make sense to you? Wouldn't you do the same?

So do something that ends this motivation of the people to become terrorists, have you got ANY plans of accomplishing that?

"What did you really expect making alliances with the most rotten people in Pakistan?..."

This is a muslim cop-out the world over. Governments work with governments. I've not yet seen a government go behind the back of a host nat'l government and conduct a successful foreign policy agenda with its public. Have you?

As such, we've worked with Musharraf and now Zardari. Oh! And your COAS. ALWAYS your COAS. Can't EVER forget that.

"...perhaps you haven't bribed them enough."

Perhaps. Perhaps, however, your civilian government has actually served their military masters exceedingly well. Plenty of lip service to the American government but no operations against the Afghan taliban upon your lands. Give credit where due. Zardari, et al. are hardly our puppets.

Were your favorite son, Imran Khan, elected we'd work with him as well. REALPOLITIK and raison d'etat demands such. So would the Brits and everybody else.

"...Strategic depth makes sense to no one in Pakistan..."

Horsecrap. There's a lot of confusion about the term, however. It doesn't mean possession of a final redoubt into which the P.A. can retreat during a war against India.

It DOES mean 1.) denying India operating leverage on your western borders by retention of a pro-Pakistani/anti-Indian afghan government and, 2.) deflection of pan-pashtun nationalist sentiments from your Punjabi east to, instead, the afghan west.

The above are clearly regional Pakistani foreign policy objectives of the HIGHEST order.

"...In the meantime you've killed the dads of a lot of kids who will ultimately grow up hating on the killers of their dads. Doesn't that make sense to you? Wouldn't you do the same?..."

Explain, then, how the United States ever achieved a union following our civil war? Explain how America has been able to foster positive long-term relationships with Japan and Germany? Was it possible for all that purported hate you suggest to be subordinated to a higher cause?

Why isn't islamic terrorism viewed in like manner?

Here's a question for you-why hasn't the great, silent, so-called "peaceful" moderate muslim majority found a voice against your own religious extremists? How is it that so-called educated lawyers laud roses upon killers of decent men inside Pakistan yet nary a voice is heard to defend the rights and beliefs of the victims?

Your issues run far deeper than can be addressed by America. All we can do is assure within our multi-ethnic/multi-religious society that any can worship their God in the house of their choosing. We do so rather successfully. There's NO WAY I'd feel safe worshipping my roman catholic God at mass in your all-too-muslim country.

Muse says our money and energies should be pointed at the wahabbist kingdom. Maybe. Funny, though, that they do a great job keeping those wahabbist/salafist loons on a short leash while deflecting their attention to more fertile ground in your nation.

Maybe your "all weather" godless commie friends can help you with that one once they quit sucking up oil contracts from K.S.A. and others.
