Coronavirus lockdown opponents claimed responsibility for Berlin explosion: Reports
No one was injured when a homemade explosive device went off in the German capital on Sunday.

Opponents of the German government’s coronavirus restrictions claimed responsibility for an explosion in Berlin last weekend, several German media outlets reported Thursday, citing police sources.
On Sunday morning, a homemade explosive device went off at the entrance of a house in central Berlin. A witness heard a bang and saw a flame that quickly went out, according to the police. No one was injured.
Der Spiegel and Tagesspiegel reported that police found a confession letter at the scene. The letter demands the resignation of Germany’s federal government, new elections and the end of all coronavirus-related restrictions, and threatens that more attacks will follow if the demands are not met, according to Der Spiegel.

The explosive device was made up of an accelerant, a computer battery and several spray cans, the magazine reported. Tagesspiegel reported it was unclear whether the device had misfired.

According to the newspaper, the Berlin state police’s commissariat for far-right extremism is now investigating the incident.

Also Sunday morning in Berlin, attackers threw incendiary devices at the offices of the Robert Koch Institute, the infectious disease agency advising the government on its response to the coronavirus. Police told Der Spiegel they were investigating a possible connection between the two cases.

On Wednesday, Chancellor Angela Merkel and the premiers of Germany’s 16 states agreed to introduce more restrictive coronavirus measures, including the closure of all bars, gyms and cultural venues for one month from Monday next week as the country has registered a steep rise in new daily infections, with another record high of 16,774 new cases reported on Thursday.

In general due to overlap in audience it all ties into the rise of right-wing terrorism in Germany though of course, same as in other countries like the militia coup plans in USA.

To be somewhat politically fair there though, German police today also arrested two left-wing terrorists who had attempted two arson attacks using incendiary explosives in connection with Corona lockdown measures. They're considered left-wing because their demands were basically that the government should restructure measures to "serve the population, not business lobbyists".

Germany will breach the 500,000-case mark on Covid-19 today btw.

Left wing because they wanted the people to come first before the business lobbyists? Wow, what a novel and wholly radical idea that the general population comes first. Right on the cutting edge. Either that or we have really gone too far in the other direction consequently they are now left-wing.

Wow, man just wow. The Americans might hog the limelight over lockdown protests but they are doing it peacefully. Any one sense an implicit threat of violence from them ?

To actually go ahead and do this is desperation. The economic implications of lockdowns are devastating.

If you lost your livelihood then what else is left.

The Domestic Intelligence services of German states do according to interviews given in the last week. Less for some little likely failed explosion like that - more for the open coup fantasies and murder threats to politicians and press by them. Mostly by the right-wing side of the lockdown opponents of course. They're not under formal observation yet but, according to the head of Domestic Intelligence of Lower Saxony last week "that can change fast".

Edit, PS.: Down here where I am in Baden-Württemberg the Intelligence Committee of the State Parliament will discuss a possible formal observation in its next meeting on Dec 3rd. There's probably a majority in favor of it.

What !! open coup fantasies and murder threats ?!?

We are talking about Germany here, right

You get the impression people might be getting a little tired of Angela.

Too bad they were unable to change things in the last election which she handily won.

This has been going on since 2015 pretty much, they've just recently found a new convenient rally point in opposing Covid lockdowns now that no one cares about refugees anymore.

Angela Merkel won't be running as chancellor candidate in next year's election. Announced by her two years ago. It's also kinda funny because in surveys she's currently running at her best - 72% of Germans are satisfied with how she does her job. 79% of Germans support lockdown measures as they have been emplaced and 72% are supportive of the most recent restriction package. It helps in that regard that 85% of Germans feel they have no problems accomodating the measures in place.

These are fringe groups though isn't it. Every country has them.

Now and then they get a headline and we get a misleading impression of whether they are representative or not.

The "Querdenken" ("lateral thinking") organisation that is the subject of the Dec 3rd intelligence committee inquest into possible formal observation by domestic intelligence gets up to 40,000 people into the streets when holding political rallies.

That's still fringe, but it's a relatively large section of fringe, especially compared to other fringe groups in Germany.

We are democrats (printed matter 19/22083) . Right-wing extremist, left-wing extremist, fascist, inhuman ideas have no place in our movement. The same applies to any kind of violence.

As i go through that translated pdf, i'm surprised to learn how many protests went on in Germany against "Corona dictatorship"

92, of varying strength (two and three digits) Starting from Apr 25 up to Aug 08 2020

The leader seems to be this man. Is he the Mayor of Stuttgart ?

A group like this can easily be hijacked by extremists from either side looking for publicity.

How to think of querdenken ?

                      German Tea party ?

                      Another Sturm & Drang ?

                      Something else....

The big ones were after August 8th.

92 protests i 3.5 months also is uh... a drop in the bucket, as far as protest rallies in Germany go. Berlin alone saw 5,350 political rallies in public during 2019.

He'd like to be, That's his campaign ad page as a candidate for the post.

He got 2.6% in the first election round, which basically meant that he split the expected right-wing extremist vote (was 4.1% in surveys...) between him and the AfD candidate who got 2.2%.

For scale the three candidates of parties of the current federal government accumulated 56.6%, the federal opposition parties 33.4%. Most of the remaining vote at 4.4% went to independent candidate Sebastian Reutter (a lawyer working for the current mayor), while Ballweg and the other six independents accumulated 7.8% between them.

There's a second round to the election sunday next week, which is pretty much guaranteed to result in a CDU win.

Since this might pop up a bit distorted in international news in a few hours.

A car rammed into the front gate of Chancellor Merkel's office this morning and scratched some bars of the steel fence.

Political slogans written on the sides of the car may suggest a tangential anti-lockdown and possible QAnon motivation ("You damn murderers of children and old people"). However the exact same car and its driver did the same thing in 2014 already, back then with an anti-climate-change slogan, so it may also be more of a "personal thing" of that person. From pictures of the fence he may have driven slightly faster this time.

Timewise, connotation is that Merkel and state minister-presidents announced a likely extension of the second lockdown until Dec 20th with slight further restrictions yesterday.

Tell me is that person going to get their car back so they can try it a third time or is it more than dented?

It's pretty much undented due to his low speed, and he'll probably get it back whenever he gets out of whatever psychiatric hospital they stick him in. The impact apparently slightly bent two bars of the gate and there are two corresponding deep scratches in the left front bumper. There are some claims the driver was lightly injured, they were taking him away in an ambulance either way.

It should be noted that of course there was never any danger of the car breaching the gate. The "gate" is actually an anti-truck metal barrier that is raised vertically and firmly anchored in the ground, the street is built so you can only approach at very slow speed and there's about three further barriers within the next 10 meters behind it. The gate is mostly a delivery entrance to the chancellery btw, the Federal Police guard station is behind it.

Supposedly according to the press he personally wanted to deliver "a letter" to Merkel. On the passenger seat of the car was a copy of a frontpage "news article" from a newspaper connected the to Austrian FPÖ extreme-right party about a 13-year-old girl supposedly dieing from using a mask. Funnily the driver's own mask was laying on top of that article. The car's license plate conveniently includes the letters HH, which is neonazi code for "Heil Hitler" (and intentionally sought after by such people).

Timing-wise (probably coincidentally), while the incident happened the "Governmental Committee for combatting Rightwing Extremism and Racism" was holding a meeting with Merkel at the chancellery, finalizing a 1-billion-Euro draft for a catalogue of 89 measures specifically in that field - including possible changes to the constitution. The committee was founded after the Hanau neonazi terrorist attack.
