There is also the playing it up when expedient angle as mentioned by Cpt. Alok Bansal here

I would like to think that when the Principal Dy. Assistant Secretary for South/Central Asia opens her mouth, she'd have had intelligence from satellite imagery for some time, which then would have been double-checked by intel from spooks on the ground.

          • The spokesperson added that there have been no new developments at the site of the face-off with China since the disengagement of troops last year.

"I would reiterate that since the disengagement of Indian and Chinese border personnel in the Doklam area on August 28, 2017, there have been no new developments at the face-off site and its vicinity. The status quo prevails in this area," the spokesperson said.

Earlier today, media reports quoted Wells as saying that China had quietly resumed its activities in the Doklam area. The government's clarification makes it clear that the previous report had misquoted the US official and taken the statement out of context.

"The press reports attributing remarks on Doklam to a US official are incorrect. The reference to Doklam was made by Congresswoman Anne Wagner in the form of a question posed to the senior state department official Alice Wells. Ms Wells, in her reply, made no reference to the situation in Doklam and said that India is vigorously defending its northern borders and this is a subject of concern to India," an official government spokesperson said.
            Bottom line

            • /\/\/\ The bottomline is why is the GoI saying what it is saying?

              * Elections close and the Government wants to dedicate time only on channeling the development works to all constituencies, and not lose focus?
              * Don't want to whip up passions vis-a-vis China as the aggressor?
              * Saving the spirit of Wuhan agreement?

I don't buy the theory that Alice Wells was incorrect, as US intelligence is far superior and accurate than Indian intel.

Oh! who is your operator ? i find i get better response on 3G than 4G these days

When internet improves listen. i usually link to the exact spot and it stops after they finish

ROE's are when our guys encounter Chinese troops, to break engagement and resume patrolling after 24h. As you saw in the videos right from the start neither side is even armed and contact rules are very strict.

Our data shows that there were over 400 transgressions in 2017 alone.

In a year, 120 days are too cold to do any patrolling, which means out of the remainder at least one or two transgressions occur daily

These are primarily in the Arunachal & Ladakh sectors

It's up to Indian media when to flare things up. When Chinese leaders visit the media will mention it. Is it really such a big deal ?

Each party has their own perceptions of LOC and we patrol to those limits pending a resolution

China does not claim all of Aruncahal but most of it. According to some Chinese scholars, 1962 was a strange war.

Won the war but still lost territory : D

Can't solve the border dispute anytime soon, so best is to freeze it until the right time.

Ensure that existing mechanisms in place are implemented to avoid flare ups

In the past these mechanisms weren't being implemented by either side and this created problems of perception. We perceive actions as hostile and then react.

So strategic communications and guidelines matter.

Yeah. As the good Colonel once stated, the Indo-China border is the most peaceful border in the world where the 2 armies trade beers. :D

PLA could not have sustained that war beyond whatever they gained. Had they not re-treated, it would have been another war lost for the Chinese.

I use hotspot, Jio 4G. If I have to download something large, and by large I mean 100MB+, I usually have to wait till 02:30 AM, speed is good hence, and remains so till about 06:00 AM. BSNL provides broadband, but it is costly and from what I've heard if that stops working, then making it work again would need a huge yagya. Not to my liking. I'm waiting for tomorrow to register Jio's fibre-optic broadband. Hope there are enough bongs who'd register, else my best thought out plans would go to waste. Allah, please help, I promise to keep feet long beard, eat pork, and marry 4 women.

ok, so you're cool with these transgressions then

True but fact remains they retreated and still claim. Won the war but lost the territory. I kinda think the same applies to us with PoK as well. If ever we try to take it isn't certain we could hold it but we too still claim it. The geography of PoK just isn't on our side like with Arunachal & the Chinese.

I wouldn't say cool, rather I understand the rationale behind these transgressions. No demarcated border.

Some thoughts in that direction would be the cost of an Indo-China war. Both sides doesn't want that to happen. And it's good that way, until both sides find an amicable solution. Indo-Pak I'm not so sure. I have a feeling that the next full blown war could go the 1971 way, and I'm not talking about skirmishes or hot pursuits or say an air-raid. Depends on how far the PA/ISI pushes us, and also how far the Indian govt is willing to lose their feet vis-a-vis the general public. BJP will be in a very tough position and most probably will sanction an air-strike in POK for an incident that has national repercussions. The main thing to note here is that India is preparing for a war against China which includes modernising the forces. It's an overkill for Pakistan, should India ever resolve to use that kind of force against her.
