Hunt starts for Qaeda supporters in Army?

    Daily Times Monitor

KARACHI: With the capture in Pakistan of Libyan Abu Farraj Al Libbi of Al Qaeda, wanted in connection with two assassination attempts against President Pervez Musharraf in 2003, Pakistani authorities are stepping up investigations into Al Qaeda’s investment in the Pakistan Army, Asia Times Online reported on Saturday.

It reported that information gleaned from well-connected military analysts suggested that army officials connected with the Afghan cell during the Taliban period in Afghanistan (1996-2001) were likely to be in the firing line and that action was expected soon against several serving and retired army personnel. “Abu Farraj is expected to be handed over to the US soon and is likely to be kept in a US detention centre in Jordan or Morocco. Abu Faeraj was deeply connected with Al Qaeda’s North African cells before becoming involved in Pakistan a few years ago. The North African cells are Al Qaeda’s most preserved, and are believed to be key to any future strikes on the US,” it reported. Asia Times Online reported that Abu Farraj was a trainer at al-Farooq camp in Afghanistan during Taliban rule and rose in prominence and became popular among the trainees as well as with the Inter-Services Intelligence’s (ISI) Afghan cell. “Abu Farraj’s interaction with Pakistanis, whether they were private militants or military men, was deep,” it added.

It said Abu Farraj had been used as a facilitator between Al Qaeda’s cells in North Africa and their support system in the UK and that his first field operation was the assignment to kill President Musharraf, which was delegated to him because of his proven abilities and his connections among Pakistani jihadis and members of the armed forces, some of whom participated in the two attempts on President Musharraf’s life.

“Al Qaeda had invested in Pakistan well before the US invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, anticipating the consequences of the September 11 attack, that is, that they would be driven out of Afghanistan. It was that goodwill among military men and jihadis that Abu Farraj tapped into to carry out his attacks on President Musharraf,” Asia Times Online reported.

It is good thing that Pakistan is trying to get rid of these Islamic fundamentalists in uniform.

However, the malaise is deep and this type of cleansing alone can diminsh the evil influence of President and General Zia out the Army. But the million dollar question is that will the evil seed planted by Zia really go?

Such evil men like Zia and the real unscrupulous politicians have ruined Pakistan, which Jinnah, after Independence, thought could be turned into a secular country.

It is so aptly stated that the goodwill between the jihadis and the military that nearly sent Musharraf to the Davey Jones' Locker!

It is not only the Army that has been affected by Zia and his disgusting policy of Islamising Pakistan; the common citizen too has been touched by his evil intent.

The sectarian violence that has given prominence and spun out of control the Sunni Shia divide, the blasphemy charges against Christians which only the good offices of the US saved them from hanging, the Nothern Area problems, Balochistan are all the sufferings that has been caused by the sins of Zia.

I do hope Musharraf succeeds. But can he rise to be the One Man Army?

Army people are mostly very liberal and unislamic. Of course, Musharraf's an Army guy and he has a gazillion enemies, internal and external. Its the logical place to recruit people to take out Musharraf. You're not allowed to visit any Islamic organization extreme or moderate. Even those QTV type discussions u see on tV? they can't do that. Most navy men are enjoying their time in clubs during their shore leaves.

Its good they're doing this. You can never be too careful with the last 2 attacks coming from close people to Musharraf. Musharraf is vital for Pakistan's progress.

The Pakistan media does not indicate so, neither does General Gul.

General Gul = that former ISI guy? Who was appointed by General Zia to form all these religious parties to fight the soviets? Those same parties who Musharraf's been tearing down? I wonder why he does not like Musharraf.

              Plat,

              You wanted the Pen, remember?

              You work for them instead.

Why should I work in Pakistan and be forced to change my religion and say prayers five times and then hit the mosque every Friday, starve myself for a month, when I don't believe in the institutionalised God. Of course, there is a wee bit of compensation that may appeal to you. You could have a harem of four, legally! ;)

              Why should I torture myself?

none of that happens in Pak. Pakistanis I've seen aren't even that Islamic. They lapse up in their prayers, don't fast (because they want to play cricket).

You're mistaking Pak with some Arab country or Afghanistan.

On that note, guess what, I was out till late last night. Like 3-4am. A Patrol car pulls over and is like show me your ID n all. Cops were trying to act all macho trying to intimidate me for no reason at all. Asking stupid questions from all three of us. The finally when nothing showed up on their computer, they're like why are u sitting here, come with us, we're going to pray! Hes like come for Tahajjud n all. I'm like !!!

Anyway got out of there, don't want to be be seen being given a ride to the nearby mosque in a cop car!

I would have to be. And that too a Sunni.

Can't have the blasphemy law applied arbitarily.

                      I love it.

Sitting down peaceably and you are hauled out to pray!

If you get outr of Dubai where are you headed?

                      To Dubyaland?

Be careful what you post in any forum or say anything that could be termed as jihadi.

And guess what is against you?

Your age! Young militant Moslems are always mistaken as terrorists.

And if you have even a wisp of a beard, just shave it off before one can say even "Jack Robinson".

You are lucky that your name does not have any "Bins", "Abus" or "Mohammed". And Asim Aquil can pass as any one. Asim Ukil (pronounced Awsheem Ookill) is a reporter for Telegraph. He is a Hindu.

Once you are in Dubyaland, have a ball like Lulldapull! ;) But don't go blowing things around.

                        .

Its very hard to believe that you state that pakistan that you have seen is not that islamic. Its a shame onyou thaty you consider being islamic is ba.There is nothing wrong in being islamic, there is nothing wromng in praying 5 times a day or fasting one month(ramsan). You seem to throw out reasons as if you are convinced that being islamic is a problem.

However i dont think that is the case.

I have a different understanding of what being Islamic means than the extremists or even the mainstream Muslims.

A modified version of deism, is the best way to put it, at least one that comes to mind right now.
