You might enjoy this speech delivered by the U.S. Dept. Of State's senior legal advisor, Harold Hongju Koh (former Dean, Yale Law School), before the attendees of the Annual Meeting Of The American Society Of International Law on March 25, 2010-

DRHUY, Your post describes my position, exactly. I am often in a position where I am sure I understand that something either is or is not legal under LOAC. I would just like to be able to punctuate my assertions with references to specific principles of LOAC and specific authoritative interpretations of them. It seems to me that my assertions would be more persuasive if I could do that.

Thank you very much. It looks very interesting. I have downloaded it and will devour it on Thursday. Pretty busy 'til then.

Is anyone familiar with this book?

The Law of Armed Conflict: International Humanitarian Law in War by
          Gary D. Solis

It sounds very good, although it certainly isn't the "Nutshell" version I was looking for. Does anyone teach this subject in college or law school? What do you use as a source?
