Yeap, I guess. :) Just been watching the news again, due too the uprising in Tusina, Egypt and Lybia. Then came the earthquake. Been glued too the thing now.

I guess I'm confused by the purpose for this thread and its location. Jeremy Morlock was charged for his crimes in early June, 2010. That was over nine months ago. Neil, are you only now aware of that and the serious and heinous nature of those crimes? Further, do you need pictures for the story to be fully revealed?

Legal proceedings are well advanced. What, therefore, explains your new-found concern? Those courts martial proceedings are slated for Wednesday, I believe, at Ft. Lewis, Washington.

Finally, as noted above, the case shall be heard in the state of Washington. Why is it, therefore, located in this section of the forum? It would seem this is an American military judicial matter and rightfully belongs in the American politics section.

As it's not the first time soldiers have been charged with crimes while under uniform and since the news of these events reaches well before the above indictment date, it would seem that whatever tactical/operational impact to be derived by the enemy and their sympathizers is minimal. If so, does this thread really belong in the WoT section of this board? What do you think about this thread being moved?

Good question Steve. Thinking about it, the crimes were committed by soldiers fighting WoT and in fact they themselves became terrorist. If this Thread is about WoT then is it necessary to move it? If it is deemed American Politics, then move it as suggested.

I must indeed admit that I was not aware of these crimes until the day I posted this thread. I included the pictures because they essentially are the story. I located the thread here because the crimes occured in Afghanistan and the reprecussions from this story will be felt most strongly in Afghanistan. The purpose of the thread was to discuss the possible implications for the ISAF mission in Afghanistan and how this leak may affect stability in the region.

My concern is the leak of the photos. Considering the reaction in Iraq to the photos from Abu Ghraib, this latest leak could have huge consequences for Afghanistan.

As stated above, I put the thread here because the reprecussions from this leak could have a direct bearing on the security mission in Afghanistan. However if you feel that it is more apt for the American politics section I won't complain.

It's the release of pictures that is most concerning. A picture is worth a thousand words as they say, or in this case I fear a thousand martyrs.

Personally I feel the thread belongs here but I can equally understand the argument for putting it in the American Politics section so I've no problem with the thread being moved :)

No sir, I had not heard or read about this until this week. I watch news, listen to radio, and read newspaper every single day. I knew about Abu Grahib due to it's 24/7 coverage, on every single newspaper, every single news channel. This was strangely low key. There were no riots in the streets of arab countries due to this incident like there were in Abu Grahib.

The thread shall stand...for the time being. The Davis thread was moved to the Internat'l section because the discussion never entered the realm of dissecting the role of LeT with Davis and, instead, focused on his court trial and diplomatic standing.

Should this thread not develop a discussion regarding security events that arise as a function of these crimes it, too, shall be moved. Note I wrote events, not speculative possibilities. I believe there will be nary a ripple but, we'll see. The pending trial is a legal proceeding having little, IMV, to do with on-going operations for America/ISAF in Afghanistan.

Please make the case that these events have inhibited ISAF operations to a degree sufficient for discussion.

I have heard about it on NPR, Public Television as well as ABC news off and on since it came out as well as in wire reports in my local paper.

Gunnut...as I said, I have been reading about this and seeing it for some time...ABC, NPR, FOX, CNN as well as USA Today and my local Richmond paper...and it wasn't hidden.

Not sure what you are getting in your neck of the woods.

Oh, and this has also been reported in the international news.

this was front page news on the WaPo when it first came out, i recall.

in any case, the scale of this incident is considerably smaller than the abu ghraib incident, which involved discipline breakdowns at almost every level, from specialist to brigadier general. there's also evidence that the atmosphere that led to abu ghraib was authorized by people relatively high up in the food chain.

this incident, while serious, seems to be an issue of one very out of whack platoon.
