So it seems that someone is taking down Jihadi affiliated websites and replacing them with anti-Jihadi propaganda. Attempts to access well known Jihadi sites re-direct to http://www.voice-of-truth.net/ (It's *probably* safe. I've clicked on it, no ill effects. And the pictures are mildly disturbing.) which shows a few photos of Taliban atrocities while nebulously referencing an "organization". Probably not written by a native English speaker, but it could just be doctored to look that way.
Awhile back, there was a person named "jester" (but spelled annoyingly with 3s and 5s) who bragged about his ability to shut down Jihadi websites for 30-60 minutes to disrupt them without taking them down. His logic being that he wouldn't interfere with intelligence agencies but would also help keep the Jihadi IT guy off balance. Apparently he made a system called XerXeS that could take these sites down with ease -- but as far as we know, he stuck with the 30 minute attacks and is not behind this current take-down.
Now, back in September of 2009, the Pentagon announced its intention to shut these sites down. But so far, nothing.
There's more at the link but I basically have three questions:
1) What do you guys think? Another cyber-vigilante? Jester? Western Intelligence?
2) What do you think about private citizens (who, near as we can tell, Jester is) doing this sort of work? Does it undermine legitimate efforts by law enforcement or is it a valid tactic done by well meaning people?
3) In general, should these sites be taken down or kept up so as to monitor who visits them and who posts and such?
Still developing, but very interesting. Stay tuned. This is the situation as I understand it; if someone knows more, please chime in.
UPDATE: Website is carrying a video of the attack. Looks interesting. Characters on the right hand side of the screen appear to be Russian but I'm not too familiar with the script. Anyone have any insight? This, of course, doesn't mean anything -- someone as smart as this wouldn't give away even as unhelpful a hint as his native language.
