Teen dies stopping suicide bomber at school in Pakistan - CNN.com

(CNN) -- A 14-year-old boy is being hailed as a hero in Pakistan for tackling a suicide bomber -- dying at the main gate of his school and saving schoolmates gathered for their morning assembly.
Ninth-grader Aitazaz Hassan Bangash was on his way to the Ibrahimzai School on Monday in the Hangu district of northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province when the bomber, dressed in a school uniform, asked him where the school was, the teen's cousin told CNN.
Aitazaz and his cousin, Musadiq Ali Bangash, became suspicious, Musadiq said.
"The other students backed off, but Aitazaz challenged the bomber and tried to catch him. During the scuffle, the bomber panicked and detonated his bomb," he said.
Rajab Ali, who also witnessed the bombing, told CNN that he saw Aitazaz throw a large stone at a boy trying to enter the school. The blast happened when Aitazaz grabbed him, he said....

There was a tremendous outpouring of emotion and support, by Pakistanis, for awarding Aitzaz a civilian or military award for courage on social media when the story of his actions broke, and for once the GoP appears to have acted without the usual bureaucratic inertia. Malala Yusufzai also announced a 500,000 rupee compensation/award for the family of Aitzaz, while the KP government led by Imran Khan has rather shamelessly said and done next to nothing. This would be a good time for IK to shift his 'blockade of NATO supplies through KP' into 'public protests against the TTP and other religious extremists'.

ISLAMABAD: As Aitizaz Hasan a teenager who sacrificed his life to stop a suicide bomber, saving the lives of hundreds of students, has been honoured with the country’s highest award for bravery.

An official from the PM house told AFP on Saturday that Hasan’s family is expected to receive the posthumous award on March 23, Pakistan’s national day following the president’s ceremonial approval.

“Shaheed Aitzaz’s brave act saved the lives of hundreds of students and established a sterling example of gallantry and patriotism,” read a statement issued by the PM house late Friday.

Pakistan army soldiers presented the guard of honour at the grave on Saturday, while hundreds of students were seen praying for Hassan in the morning school assembly.

“We are proud of him, he saved our lives, we will remember him forever,” a student from Hangu told reporters.
Ode to Aitizaz questions where Imran Khan’s ‘thekedaars’ are hiding
As legislators in the K-P Assembly shied away from lauding the hero, an admirer of young Aitizaz Hasan read out a poem asking what the so called loyalists of the nation were hiding behind now.

Below is an Urdu transcription together with an English translation of the poem:

“Dhoonda jab shahaadat ne, Aitizaz mil gaya,
Choti si umar mein bara aizaaz mil gaya.

Martyrdom found its way to Aitizaz,
A colossal honour bestowed at a tender age,

Ek mard-e-mujahid khud ko qurbaan ker gaya,
Shaheed ho ke qaum per ihsaan ker gaya,

A soldier’s sacrifice for his people,
A martyr’s unparalleled service to his nation,

Mita diya zaalim ko faqatt ek waar se,
Thori si umar mein bara ai’laan ker gaya,

He erased evil with a single act,
An immense victory for a mere youth,

Shaheed Aitizaz ke gham-khwaar na aye,
Imran Khan ke woh thekedaar na aye,

Those who claimed to be with him never arrived,
The companions of Imran Khan never arrived,

Chakkay laganay walay woh leader kahan gaye?
Lafzon se kheltay woh Sikandar kahan gaye?

I say, where are those known for their heroic sixes?
I ask, where are those known to roar like lions?

Malala ke gham-khwaar naamwar kahan gaye?
TV peh aanay walay mu’tabir kahan gaye?”

The so-called admirers of Malala, where are they?
Where are the talking heads always there on TV?

It looks like the flood of criticism directed at Imran Khan and his KP government has had some effect. IK may just be responding to public pressure, but even in that there is a positive lining - that major political parties are, slowly, beginning to respond to public anger against perceived 'coddling of extremists/terrorists', and that the Pakistani media is providing enough coverage to these issues to play a part in driving the slight shift in public attitudes on the part of elected officials:

Aitizaz Hasan: Imran 'deeply disappointed' at K-P govt's lack of response
By Web DeskPublished: January 12, 2014

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairperson Imran Khan on Sunday expressed disappointment over how poorly Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government responded to Aitizaz Hasan’s death, Express News reported.
Hasan – a student from Hangu – tackled a bomber on January 6 who had come to attack his school at a time when hundreds of students were inside. The brave boy died while protecting others.

Speaking to the media in Lahore, Imran said he was proud of the teenager’s martyrdom and that he was a national hero.

He said it was sad that the provincial government failed to reach the young boy’s family.

On the occasion, Imran announced that his party will cooperate with Hasan’s family and take care of their expenses.

The PTI chairperson also announced the establishment of Aitizaz Hasan Fund.

            IHRC award
The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) on Sunday bestowed a global bravery award on Hasan.

An IHRC delegation visited Hasan’s grave and the family and condoled the death of the young boy.

On January 11, Hasan was honoured with the Sitara-e-Shujaat, the country’s highest award for bravery.

An official from the PM house said the boy’s family was expected to receive the posthumous award on March 23, Pakistan’s national day following the president’s ceremonial approval.

Nothing empirical or specific I can point to - its more of a gauge of public sentiment, media direction, actions taken by the political elite (followed and assessed over time) all taken together.

And Imran Khan's position continues to evolve in the face of the recent brazen terrorist attacks on security forces and the Shia:

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) chiarman Imran Khan on Wednesday said his party would stand by the army in case a military operation is to be launched to counter the terrorist threat, DawnNews reported.

Speaking to media representatives, Khan said the government had failed in its bid to hold talks with the Taliban, adding that his party should be taken into confidence if a military operation is to be launched.

Khan, whose party has been a longstanding advocate of dialogue with the Taliban, said anti-state elements had triumphed which could have been prevented had the government sought cooperation from the people of the tribal areas.

He said all political parties had given the government the mandate to begin talks with the Taliban, adding that although Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif circled around the world and made international visits, no good came out of these.

Khan said his party would stand by the army when times come to launch a military operation.

The PTI chief’s statement came a day after at least 40 people were killed in air strikes in North Waziristan.

The strikes appeared to be a tit-for-tat response to the militant bombings in Bannu and Rawalpindi. However, security officials have said the strikes were carried out on the basis of intelligence reports.

One additional element I would like to point out in the shift seen in Imran Khan's position - no US drone strikes of late to deflect the blame for terrorism on.
