    The one that suceeds!

Combat actions are you win some, you lose some.

    Awfully difficult to quantify.

"Some have learnt many Tricks of sly Evasion, Instead of Truth they use Equivocation, And eke it out with mental Reservation, Which is to good Men an Abomination."

I don't have to attend every argument I'm invited to.

It’s hard to say, especially because it isn't much known about them. My guess would be between British SAS and Russian Alfa's.

In terms of training, it takes more than a year to produce a U.S Army Special Forces soldier (aka Green Berets). They're the best at what THEY do. I can't compare them to the SEALs, because SEALs specialize in maritime operations.

So, there's really no "Who's better?...." question here.

It's like comparing apples and oranges.

But I know of no other units like the U.S Army Special Forces in the world, so I'll assume they're the best.

The SAS beats them hands down, at least this is what joint exercises have shown.

          Cheers!...on the rocks!!

Disagree Captain. The SAS does not carry heavy firepower with them. They call in strikes instead. That's a whole world of difference when compare to forces who carry their own firepower (ie, the Indian Army).

              Sir,
I'll clarify myself. From info read in memoires of ex-SAS officers/NCOs, for instance during joint exercises, The SAS teams were always a minute or two ahead of the US teams in basic drills like slithering down choppers and quick assault. I was just comparing these basic issues.

Sir that is use of old doctrine which I belive is changing now. The IAF has become a little more accurate and we are not scared of calling them in :)

              Cheers!...on the rocks!!

                You sound rather convinced.

"Special Forces (SF) - De Oppresso Liber- Special Forces soldiers receive training in a variety of individual and special skills. These skills include operations, intelligence, communications, medical aid, engineering, and weapons. SF soldiers train, advise, and assist host-nation military or paramilitary forces in a variety of conventional and unconventional warfare techniques. SF soldiers are highly skilled operators, trainers, and teachers. Regionally oriented, these soldiers are specially trained in their respective area's native language and culture."

Well, that's what the SF does. Don't know if the SAS can really be compared to them. But I don't know what the SAS does, so.....

Yes, being a former Captain in Indian Army makes him to say that

Special Forces are force multipliers. They take local forces and train the hell out of them. They assist local populations in community building and resisting unconventional attacks. Special Forces are wasted assets in the traditional "go behind enemy lines and blow something up" role. They can do it, and do it well, but they are painstakingly trained for so much more.

SAS are primarily anti-terrorist and assassination (not to put too fine a point on it).
That's just a rough description though.
One of the reasons that SAS are described as "the best" is that they have so much more experience than pretty much anybody else.
“He was the most prodigious personification of all human inferiorities. He was an utterly incapable, unadapted, irresponsible, psychopathic personality, full of empty, infantile fantasies, but cursed with the keen intuition of a rat or a guttersnipe. He represented the shadow, the inferior part of everybody’s personality, in an overwhelming degree, and this was another reason why they fell for him.”

Yea TopHat, you got it. The training itself takes 1 year (or MORE for Medical Sergeants!!). They completely immerse themselves into the culture (they dress, look, and talk like the native people).

When I think of SAS, I think Delta, since that's how Delta was inspired (the SAS). SF is just something completely different from the SAS.

SF in Afghanistan. Pretty freakin' unconventional.

Huge ass video about SF. :)

The probation period in SAS (and Indian Para Cdo units) is 3 months prior to ones acceptance in the unit.

The British SAS and SBS are the best and every serviceman respects that.
The US Delta are fanatstic and then i think it's the Seals
You can't count the Aussie's out so i'm putting them right below the US because they are superior when it comes to special forces.
The Russian Spestnaz are some really tough SOB's.
