In 1948 before the existance of the PRC, Chinese Communist Party member Chin Peng led an attempt to establish a Chinese Communist state in Malaya (now Malaysia).
This was the CCPs' first move against a foreign country, predating their moves against South Korea, Tibet, India and Vietnam. It is also the first clearly recognized defeat of a communist takeover attempt.
Do any here have firsthand knowledge of the Malayan Emergency?
It was in fact a war, but was downgraded to Emergency for various economic and other reasons - given.
