              Attack at Woodburn, Tennessee

              The National Currency Act was signed into law by President Lincoln, creating a national banking system, a Currency Bureau and the office of Comptroller of the Currency. The act's goal was to establish a single currency.

                      General John Pope lays siege to New Madrid

                      1863 Naval assaults on Ft. McAllister resumes, lasting eight hours on this day. The damage to the fort's sand walls is quickly repaired.

                      The Conscription Act (National Enrollment Act of 1863) is signed into law by President Lincoln. Congress requires quotas of draftees by state, but allows wealthy Americans the right to buy their way out of service for $300.00. Also called the Draft Act or any number of variations.

                      • 1861 Confederate Convention in Montgomery adopts the "Stars and Bars" as the nation's flag

                        Abraham Lincoln is inaugurated President of the United States. 7 states had already seceded.

                        1862 Over what is generally regarded as a communication problem, Halleck relieves Grant from command and replaces him with Charles Ferguson Smith. It turned out that a telegraph clerk with Southern sympathies was misrouting messages.

                        Lincoln outlines his second term talking directly to the Confederate people "...with malice toward none; with charity for all..." Andrew Johnson, replacing Henry Hamlin as Vice-president gives a rambling, drunk speech. He had been given too much whiskey as medicine by a doctor.

                            Robert Barnwell Rhett of South Carolina proposes a new design for a Confederate flag with a yellow sun in a blue shield with a ray for each state. It would eliminate the stars and the red, white, and blue combinations of the Yankee flag.

                              1862 The Battle of Pea Ridge/Elkhorn Tavern A battle with quite an amazing amount of intriguing unusual events. Large number of Native American troops for the Confederates, the Confederates were better armed than the union (happened quite a bit in the Trans Mississippi) and the battle lines and logistics trains shifted 180 degrees over night.                                 Lincoln, tired of McClellan's foot dragging, names the cots commanders of the AOP.

                                Joe Johnston orders the Confederate forces near Manassas to fall back to the Rappahanock River.

                                1864 Abraham Lincoln and U. S. Grant meet for the first time at the White House. Grant arrives in the midst of a reception and is mobbed by the crowd. He ends up stepping up onto a couch so he can be above the crowd.
