  • Unwritten memoirs and tactical histories

What tactical history, personal memoir, or, "I was there" story would you love to read about that hasn't been written?

I wish some of the Vietnam scout dog handlers and combat trackers would write their stories. Bookshelves are filled with paperbacks about LRRPs and SEALs from that era. Yet, I've never seen a single book about the scout dogs or combat trackers.

Each infantry division in Vietnam had a company of LRRPs but only one platoon of scout dogs and one platoon of combat trackers. And the combat trackers were trained by SAS and Iban natives at the very demanding British Jungle Warfare School in Malaysia. Both units were an elite by anyone's definition and the work they did was "hairy" to say the least.

    How about the 'Tunnel Rats'.

Not a lot has been written about the tunnel rats but I am aware of one book: The Tunnels of Cu Chi. There's also been at least one book about pathfinders in Vietnam.

Still, not a single account of scout dog handlers or combat trackers that I'm aware of.
