    Boat building

    Over the next two to three years I'd like to be able to build a cruiser. I need it to be something I can build myself, preferably out of ply or steel because of cost. I'd like it to be large enough to spend a few days at a time with the family on board, 30 - 40 ft? Nothing too flash, just enough that the kids can have a good time. Anybody know of any good homebuild plans out there?

    Don't do what my grad school roomie and her scull-building boyfriend almost did.

    me, coming into the basement: "Hey guys, cool. What's that?"

    Carol: "Matt is teaching me to build a rowing scull."

    me: "Neat. Is it smart to build it down here? Pretty tight spaces."

    Matt: "Yeah, we made sure we could get the keel piece in and out. It's a tight fit but we can just make it up the stairs and around that corner."

    me: "Hm. You sure? That's an awfully tight corner."

    them: "Oh yeah."

    me: "The scull's wider than the keel right? Like a foot wide? Like too wide to go around the corner even though the keel can?"

    them: "Oh."

    So Dale say "Beware building boats in basements when hormones cloud judgement."

    Parihaka= ambition

    A 30'-40' boat is a huge undertaking. Most boat plans I used to know of are much smaller.

    The whole point of getting a hobby is for the peace and quiet AWAY from the wife and kids

    Nah. They measured after I left and determined that the full craft would not, in fact, make it around the corners. Sheepishly, they moved the effort to his house.

    What, like a heavy cruiser...light cruiser? I'm a fan of the Des Moines class with the rapid-fire 8-inch guns....

    ...oh wait, were you talking about something else?

    Sorry, I'm sure you were hoping for something else with your one and only bump

    While I'm not averse to some armaments (depth charges for fishing for instance) I was thinking more on the lines of PT109
