It must be a regional thing. In the South, the atttitude towards service is one of unfeigned admiration. I've seen the entire Terminal D at Dallas/Ft. Worth airport stop what they are doing, and applaud returning soldiers.
Yeah, even today it seems people "run away" right here at home. Either they feel no empathy with our service people or no tinge of quilt for leaving it up to others to serve. Gratitude would be enough.
