It's been quite the day for 6-year-olds in the news. Earlier, we told you about the courageous, 6-year-old Texas boy who has already raised $10,000 for his Dad's cancer treatment.
In less positive news, a 6-year-old girl in Georgia was handcuffed by police and charged with assault after throwing a "tantrum" in her elementary school. Local tv affiliate 13WMAZ reports that Salecia Johnson, who is in kindergarten, was detained by police after her alleged outburst.
"Our policy is that any detainee transported to our station in a patrol vehicle is to be handcuffed in the back. There is no age discrimination on that rule," Milledgeville Chief of Police Dray Swicord, told the station.
Swicord said the officer who handcuffed Johnson is not facing an investigation over his actions. Swicord added that Johnson was handcuffed for her safety as well as the safety of others. She was taken to the principal's office after pushing two other students, according to a police report.
"The student was never placed in a holding cell or jail cell and the student's safety was of the utmost importance," Swicord said.
However, Johnson's parents are trying to organize a community protest against the officer's actions, including reported plans to contact civil rights activist and MSNBC host Al Sharpton.
The officer's police report says Johnson began tearing items off the school principal's office walls and was throwing furniture. The report says Johnson knocked over a shelf that injured the principal.
Johnson also was reportedly biting a doorknob and attempting to break a glass frame while jumping on top of a paper shredder.
"She has mood swings some days, which all of us had mood swings some days," Johnson's mother Constance Ruff told WMAZ. "I guess that was just one of her bad days."
After Johnson was handcuffed, she was taken to the local police station and charged with simple assault and damage to property. However, because of her young age, Johnson will reportedly not be prosecuted.
"A 6-year-old in kindergarten. They don't have no business calling the police and handcuffing my child," said Earnest Johnson, Salecia's father.

LOL Yes they do have the right as she was a danger to herself and those around her. They even have the right to throw that little priss out of school. As for everyone else, remember this kid's name. She will be in the news someday and the news won't be good.

Saw this in my local and thought the school's reaction was way over the top.
Of course they're afraid of lawsuits.
Over here that problem does not exist, that kid would have gotten it good by the principal her/himself.

Troung beat me to it.
I also get saddled with working with kids of this mentality. They will grab knifes scissors and attempt to do harm. They will push people down stairs/in front of cars etc. They also bite and scratch if given the chance. Now as a cop do you want to be bitten by a kid who may have hepatitis/AIDS or something similar? No. You do what is needed to protect the kid and everyone else in the area so handcuffing may not be out of the question.
Now if the kid is lashing out because of some sort of abuse thats one thing. If she is a spoiled brat a couple of trips to the woodshed would change her ways rather quickly but sadly the school is unable to do that anymore. The best thing the school can do is expel her and charge the parents for the damage.
She injured the principle. 6 years old is 1st grade, that is a sign that this kid has already had some problems- not ready to start kindergarden at the usual age - or held back. Her parents trying to blame the school, when their kid attacks people and destroys the principles office - IMO, they should have taken her to a mental hospital for a psych eval.-This kid and her parents are broken. When I was a kid it never would have gone that far, the principle had a board of education on his desk, and he used it when necessary (it was a paddle). Kids who attacked teachers got tackled and restrained - that was the normal response - in kindergarden, it was a paddling and a stay in a quiet room - an empty little room with a rug on the floor and a oneway glass window (kids would normally be encouraged to take a nap on the rug). And the police could come and take them away without any questions asked (this normally happened much later like in junior high), and the parents were ashamed - not publicly defending their little monster... Another thing, no news agency would have printed this story back then, much less the kid's name. These vile news people are worse than the kid.

Injures the principal, so there are other adults around. A six year old is no match for an adult.
Cops have better things to do than run 6 yr olds in.
This is the other curious thing, if there is a court case going on they usually never reveal the names of minors. But this isn't the same. Once it gets blown up beyond the school, and this went worldwide it creates a very different situation. Its blown up beyond all proportion.
