I need help and I'm hoping some kind soul here would take the time to explain this to me or teach me how to do this right.
My problem is I travel alot and endless hours on an airplane has taught me the best way to travel is to watch movies and the best way to do that is with tablets.
Problem is that I'm a greedy bastard and I want as much movies stuffed into my tab as possible in my 64 gig tablet. Also after 3 different tabs, I fell in love with the ASUS Transformers.
Yeah it runs an Andrioid Honeycomb and while the interface doesn't even begin to compare with the iTab, it does give me excellent video quality so I think I'm going to stick with this for awhile.
I've been coverting to MP4 formats with the following specs....
Video:
Resolution 1280 X 720
Data rate 2500 to 3000 kbps
Total Bitrate 2500 to 3000 kbps
29 frames /second
Audio:
Bit rate 128 to 192 kbps
Channels 2 (stereo)
Audio sample rate 48 kHzs
Now my problem is this.
Of course, I can make the quality of the video and audio much better but that would also jack up the size of the file immensely.
I'm hoping someone here knows the best way (or settings) to convert 1080i avis (mkv, mpg, flv...etc) into a 1280 by 720 mpg format while keeping a good chunk of the video quality intact(not overly important) while also retaining most of the audio quality (very important) while reducing the size of the file as much as possible!
The screen on the tab is capable of 1080 resolution but it's only 10 inches or so, so I'm hoping to maybe get away with 480 if possible.
If someone can help me with this one, I promise I won't mess up the good threads.

The speakers your tablet has will do just fine with 24kHz stereo for a start. Also, 25fps is more then enough to have descent quality video.
These two should reduce the file size by 15%. If that's not enough, for a 10" screen 1080 resolution should also be enough.
o/c If you don't want to compromise with the quality, you can skip tablets for 2 days and with the savings you can go to the nearest tech store and buy 1TB external HDD with USB and stick into your tablet :D

Was going to get an external drive but don't know if the tab can support it and even if it does, it's going to suck up power, which defeats the purpose of the tab with it's good battery life.
Only tab that supports external drive and full size USB for sure is the Toshiba Thrive but it has lousy audio input through the headphone jack, which makes it impossible to listen to on a plane even with noise reducing headphones.
There is no competition. Mpeg Streamclip. I use it extensively for webcast and when overseas send back files for broadcast. All conversions are very much dependent on what software/codecs you use and despite mpegstreamclip being the rolls royce of converters it is :gasp: freeware! Just remember to deinterlace your video and play with the obvious follow-your-nose settings for the best size/quality tradeoff.
As for audio, it's size is so insignificant don't compress it at all
