You guys OK? Is everything there built to withstand this type of tremors? I know 5.8 over here could barely get people to notice.

The local phone lines are down.

I thought maybe the Republicans and Democrats in Congress had come up with a plan to work together or something...or Robert E. Lee had risen from the grave!

it shook for a while in the Pentagon. evoked some bad memories...
The human mind cannot grasp the causes of phenomena in the aggregate. But the need to find these causes is inherent in man’s soul. And the human intellect, without investigating the multiplicity and complexity of the conditions of phenomena, any one of which taken separately may seem to be the cause, snatches at the first, the most intelligible approximation to a cause, and says: “This is the cause!"

That must have been going through some minds for a while. Thankfully, if it can be put that way, it was an earthquake.

A 5.8 centered in Virginia came our way shook everything from Virginia to Pennsylvania to New Jersey to New York. My whole house and neighborhood shook.

How can anyone actually feel a 5.8 quake? We usually dismiss that as a fat guy walking by here in California. You guys are a bunch of amateurs...

I work on the top floor of our building in NJ. I felt the floor rumbling then my office shook a bit. Then I could feel the building swaying and heard something rattling above. After a brief WTF?!?! moment it occurred to me it was time to get the hell out.

They evacuated the building and sent everyone home.

I couldn't believe it was all the way in Virginia considering how strong I felt it in NJ.

I read somewhere that shaking from earthquakes propagates much further in the Eastern US than in California.

Really? How does that work? Single solid plate as opposed to 2 separate plates with million of fault lines?

As long as no one's hurt then it's all good. Just some frayed nerves.
