    Battle L.A.?

OK, over the last few days, I've seen at least 4 Cobra gunships, 4 Ospreys, a convoy made up of at least 30 HMV's and trucks all with armor on the Santa Monica fwy and just right now I saw 2 (what seems like) Chinooks flying very low over the "Hollywood" sign.

Did aliens invade Santa Monica again and no one told me or is there some sort of exercise going on in L.A.?

Military equipment is not something you see often over L.A. Last time was about 3 years ago when I saw a lone Cobra fly pretty high up over the city.

Question: Is there somewhere I can go to find out what's going on?

When I lived in San Fernando, I remember it was pretty common for those large Navy Helo's crossing east to west. Either in route to the Naval station north of Ventura or maybe a training mission? The first time I saw one, it reminded me near the naval base in San Diego, where its fairly common to see them fly, they usually have a flight path right above the 54 freeway. Kept thinking to my self, why is the flight path right over San Fernando valley? Maybe a bit of scenic sight seeing? There isn't navy bases for that flight path, or maybe its relativly flat, IE unlike to the north where there are very high peeks, hence flying over San Fernando then up the coast.

For the Military vehicles, maybe it could of been national guard equipment? I can't think of a national guard depot in and around there though, I remember seeing a few Humvee and stuff on the I5.

But yeah, being in San Diego, we are pretty used to the military equipment. Either Navy fights flying in and out of North Island, when your in Coranndo in dog beach, they fly right over you. Or the Naval helo's out of 32nd Naval base. Or Miramar Marine F/18's flying in North County. You always here the loud booms up in North County. Los Angeles, in the main portion, there isn't alot of bases.

I've seen alot of contrails and helicopter right off the coast going either N to S or vice versa and I always thought those were going from San Diego to Oxnard Naval bases but I haven't seen one in over five years.

I also just saw a couple of Hueys in desert paint so I'm thinking they're shooting a movie somewhere near by.

Don't think there are anymore Hueys in the services.

I'm not in SoCal but, for the first time in living memory, I've seen a couple of Whiskeys (AH-1W's) fly over; NEVER seen those before! A lot of -47's from the nearby ANG base, but never any gunships. Very impressive!

USMC have UH-1N and UH-1Y in service, so in conjunction with the Cobras and Ospreys you saw, it makes sense.

I can assure you that I am in no way responsible for this, and this has nothing to do with me trying to take over the world. *checks date* Yep, not me.

Last week in N. Hollywood I spotted a couple of CH-47 fly around. And some UH-60 came pretty close to my house a few days back. It's not that often, but you might see a military helicopter every 2 or 3 months or so.

Not sure if those were Chinooks.

All the hardware I've seen are of USMC so far.

Do they operate any twin rotor copters?

Seemed like Chinooks but somehow they seem smaller....

CH-46 Sea Knight. USMC. Medium lift tandem helicopter
CH-47 Chinook. US Army and some allied countries. Heavy Lift tandem helicopter.
Both from Boeing. The 46 is getting replaced by the Osprey. The 47 is (I believe) if not still in production, it is getting rebuilt to another model which gives it more range, lift etc etc.

If you don't know the difference, and you are far enough away, they would look superficially similar. the 47 is much larger than the 46.
