Water is only as good as the source, and whatever people do to it before it hits the tap. Most water in Oregon is first rate. Water in northern california is good, but by the time it gets to So Cal its a whole different animal. Tap in vegas is horrible. Not fit to flush down the toilet let alone drink it. Some water in the midwest had a lot of minerals in it but it could be treated and improved by the time it hit the tap. A "tap" from a spring in South Dakota was the best water I had.

I drink tap water if I really want to drink water.

I have a question. Is the US the only nation to have nation-wide drinkable tap water? I don't drink water so I don't know what other countries do. I know for a fact that we are cautioned not to drink water (unless boiled) in places like Mexico and India.
Water in the EU zone is quite drinkable, I think. At least while in the UK (not in London, some backwater near Bradford) we used regular tap water.

However, the European restaurants will refuse to give you tap water and instead insist that you buy bottled, at least the ones in Amsterdam and Paris.

I tried to stick to bottled water in Mexico, but I finally gave up. I figured the ice in my margaritas came out of the taps anyway, and damned if I was going to go without margaritas in Mexico.

I didn't overdo it, but I never had a problem. Same with Costa Rica, Bahamas. Drank that water and didn't get sick.

Might have had something to do with the fact that your magaritas had alcohol in them. Inhibits growth of any germs that might give you the runs. Safer than if you just had juice.

This is a simple way to be safer eating street food here, follow it with a peg of something

^^ Could be. I doubt my BAC ever fell below .15 the entire time I was down there.

The water in Jamaica was good - but I hardly drank any - the rum punch and red stripe was more enticing

i stayed in riu negril last year, there were signs in a bathroom, don't drink tap water, whether they were being too careful,or water was bad for real, idk, i drank beer.
btw, i asked lady that cleans rooms\fills fridge, to give me red stripe, instead of that nasty bear they put by default, well, red stripe she brought, was imported, lol, from USA, as all other drinks, and food. I tried it, it didn't taste the same as local red stripe i bought in in city, so i didn't even drink those bottles, i had to get a cab and drive to local place 15 min away to get real Jamaican red stripe.

Never had any sort of problem with alcoholic beverages down south but got sick at least two times from eating ceviche and salad washed by tap water. :(

Next time you better ask them to wash your salad in tequila.
