In Honour of a certain Colonel

With deep appreciation and gratitude, we, the members and staff of the World Affairs Board take great pleasure in presenting to

    COL WAYLAND YU,

this time-honoured sword bearing the insignia of the Corps of Royal Engineers.

Due to his unwavering leadership, excellent insights and contributions, the World Affairs Board has grown to a greater stature, and today stands as a premier politico-military forum. He always has and continues to be a generous mentor, a good friend, and a fierce opponent in debate for our community.

I have to admit that this posting is quite a bit late. The Sword for the Colonel for his Semi-retirement had been bought several months ago. Sadly shipping an antique sword through several countries is a lot harder than one might think. Luckily it did recently arrive where it belongs. Yet I am somewhat disappointed in myself that I was not able to do this on the 11th of march as planned...so I would have an excuse to sue the following clip:

(not that I would let that stop me anyway).

The gift was organized by pretty much the whole staff (active and retired). I am sure that there are many more members on WAB who would also have contributed if asked, but we tried to keep the group manageable small, to prevent the Colonel from learning about this too early.

    Nice! Beautiful sword!

Any background for the sword? Country of origin? Time period?

It is an original Royal Engineer's Sword, Infantry Pattern 1897 from the United Kingdom and is over a hundred years old. Sadly it is not a "named" sword. Meaning it's lineage is unkown.

A truly wonderful and well deserved presentation to a man of Honour, Dignity and Faith.

    Tonight I will lift a glass of the finest port to you Colonel and say for the one and only time in my life;

Quo fas et gloria ducunt (Whither right and glory lead).

this is the rousting bit where we all raise the tankards. cheers to our Old Man!
The human mind cannot grasp the causes of phenomena in the aggregate. But the need to find these causes is inherent in man’s soul. And the human intellect, without investigating the multiplicity and complexity of the conditions of phenomena, any one of which taken separately may seem to be the cause, snatches at the first, the most intelligible approximation to a cause, and says: “This is the cause!"

If it has a serial No it could possibly be traced. Beautiful sword and beautiful workmanship. I'm sure the Colonel is a worthy recipient.

A glass of 18 year old Glenfiddich was lifted tonight, and then luxuriously downed...

    People,

I am still like a little kid with a new toy. I'm still imagining the stories this piece of history is telling me. I am extremely appreciative. I'm going to hang on to this for a few more weeks. Then, I will propably donate it to my favourite watering hole so that I can enjoy its company and the company of others smoking my favourite cigar.

I had this image of donating this to the USMC with Ann Murray singing SNOWBIRD in the background and then sending that video to the GS.

My much appreciated thanks to all. It is truly a wonderous gift.

A well deserved Honor to a much respected Man.

I will tip my glass in your honor tonight. (Would have done it yesterday if I had seen the thread) And a toast to our professions shared motto
