ASIO alerted to suspect submarine buyer


A Victorian man who has been trying to sell a former Navy submarine has revealed ASIO was called on to investigate a suspicious call from someone who wanted to get it operational.

The Western Port Oberon Association tried to sell the Otama on the internet earlier this year after it failed to get enough backing to turn it into a tourist attraction at Hastings.

Association president Max Bryant says he rang ASIO because he thought the potential buyer might use the vessel for something illegal.

"They just listened intently to what I had to say," he said.

"They were concerned. They asked me for the details and they said they would look into it."
