Though, when I was in France the people were always actually rather nice and polite. Though it made a huge difference if you tried to talk to them in broken French (which they prefered) or more or less fluent English (with most did not like).

I always figured it was some government program to get them to spend as much time as possible out of the country.

To be fair (an you know I am always a fair man Tankie ) my own countrymen do not always travel well. There is the well known 'ockerfication' that occours to some the moment they clear the airport - they change from quiet suburban souls into Bazza bloody MacKenzie or Crocodile Dundee.

No, individually they are really the most polite and friendly people I've encountered. I remember how annoyed I was on the way back to France when I met my first fellow countrymen again: Talking loud, saying nonsense etc.. :(
