    Need help: extending wireless network

    Hi fellow wabbits.

I have been using my linksys wrt54gc with my adsl2 modem for a couple of years now.
Recently we renovated and extended our home so now half of the house isn't getting any wireless signal.
So i have been looking into how to extend my wireless connection to the unreached part of the house. The more i research the more confused i get.
Any suggestions on how to extend my home wireless network without any extra cables? Im stuck right now so any advice would be greatly welcomed.

You could, when they were first brought out, get an external antennae to boost it's range but ultimately it's designed for a hotel/motel room or small apartment.
While the wrt54gc is a beautiful device, the larger uglier WAP54G will allow you to sit in your neighbours house and still hook in with your laptop

wHY Why would you need extra cabling if it's WIRELESS )))

Because the recognised way to extend a wireless network is to connect a cat 5 cable from the existing wireless router to a new wireless router which then broadcasts the same signal. I dont want to deal with a long length (10m or so) of additional cable cluttering up the place just after an expensive renovation.

Pari, linksys has released a new router series to replace those iconic blue boxes. What do you think of the WAG54g2?

The specs actually look a lot better but the box IMHO looks even uglier than the blue one. No loss though, as long as the things work properly they sit out the back unnoticed anyway.
Range is better so unless you've built the new Versailles or lined your walls with multiple layers of tinfoil you should be fine, four plugs makes life much easier and everything else looks much the same.
I do have one warning though, the first linksys I had worked perfectly until one day there was a temporary power cut and the subsequent power spike trashed the firmware. Once that happens, despite various blogsites remedies, the thing was a brick. There was just no way in hell to reset it and upload new firmware.

Ahh thanks for the warning Pari, hopefully my UPS plus fuze should take care of the power issue.
The reviews seem to be mostly positive on it and the price is reasonable. Looks like i may go for it.
My walls are pretty standard breeze block construction. I need to get the signal through 4 walls, my room where the modem is located, the living room and the home office of my dad in the corner of the house, but if my current one can get a low signal through 3 of those walls this one should be able to improve enough on it.

Yeah easily, judging by the specs. I've currently got a belkin with much the same specs and I can log on from my parents-in-laws house 80 meters away.

just get a repeater, aka range booster, it will get signal from your router(wirelessly), and boost it. i had one before, it did the job, than i switched to n band router, n band has a lot bigger range

I would suggest the Hawking Extender.

Just went to my favourite shop in Bangalore over the weekend. A linksys wireless range extender turned out to be about the same cost as buying a new wrt 160n draft n router(Rs 5600).
So now am looking at reviews for it.

Dont repeaters halve the available bandwidth of the signal they rebroadcast? I read that say yout router is a 54mbps unit then the repeater will effectively put out 27mbps.

Actually OOE pretty much everyone is always watching movies and listening to music through the network, this is already pretty slow on a 54mbp connection.

    Sir,

If you have an Airtel connection, or some other provider...all you need to do is to give 'em a call and they'll fix your problem without any charge or a very nominal charge..(atleast for airtel).

I have an Airtel connection, and was provided with the Beetel 450BXI, it works just fine.
I've been able to connect to it from a neighbour's house.

Oh I didnt know that. And no need for the sir soham.
The last time airtel offered to install wireless for me they wanted a rental of 500 a month compared to zero for my 220 bx right now.
Maybe they have a better offer in your city.
