Good News Stories Threat
One thing that I have realized is that there are barely any posts involving feel good news stories on this board, stories involving good Samaritans, or the co-operation of various nations for the good of others. So I will try something new. I will try to post good news items from time to time on this threat. Hopefully some will find this interesting.

Cyprus donates liver to Israeli
I am a registered organ donor. So I appreciate the below story.
Cyprus donates liver to Israeli Judy Siegel-Itzkovich , THE JERUSALEM POST May. 8, 2008 An organ transplant "harvesting" team flew to Cyprus on the eve of Remembrance Day to collect a liver that was not needed there. A few hours before the beginning of Remembrance Day, the Israel Transplant coordinating center received a call from the transplant coordinator in Cyprus that there was a donor and that Cyprus was willing to give Israel the liver if an Israeli team were ready to come and get it. Hadassah said it had a tissue-compatible 63-year-old man waiting in the queue for a donor liver. A private airline with small jets, Monair, agreed to fly the team, which brought along a cooler with ice and special solutions to preserve organs. When the team's vehicle got stuck in traffic at the Castel near Jerusalem on the way to Sde Dov Airport, the Traffic Police sent two policemen on motorcycles to clear the roads and accompany the team from Hadassah-University Medical Center to Sde Dov in time for their flight, which was specially approved by the Sde Dov manager. After collecting the liver, the team brought it back to Jerusalem in the cooler, and the operation was performed. Cyprus surgeons transplant only kidneys and therefore did not have use for the liver. When there is a possibility of saving other organs from the same donor, the transplant coordinator there calls representatives in other countries with which it has an agreement. Greece has an agreement with Israel on hearts, while Austria has one for lungs. In the last half-year, Israel has received four organs from Cyprus, and now the Health Ministry is working to promote official cooperation between the two countries. Four people attached to respirators and put into artificial comas are waiting for lung donations. One, age 24, is at Soroka University Medical Center in Beersheba, and three others, aged 37, 47 and 48, are at the Rabin Medical Center. Without donor lungs, their chances for survival are very low, according to Israel Transplant. Cyprus donates liver to Israeli | Jerusalem Post |

Blind Bowler Scores Perfect Game

Blind Bowler Scores Perfect Game POSTED: 11:51 am CDT May 8, 2008 UPDATED: 2:08 pm CDT May 8, 2008 DES MOINES, Iowa -- A blind Iowa man scored a perfect 300 game at the Century Lanes bowling alley on Saturday, The Storm Lake Times reported. The Times said Dale Davis, 78, of Alta, called the game "quite a thrill." He rolled 12 back-to-back strikes, the first-ever perfect game at the Century Lanes, The Times reported. Excitement throughout the building grew as the crowd watched Davis roll ball after ball down the lanes. "When I got to the tenth frame, I said ‘Lord, let me throw three more good balls,’ Davis told The Times. Davis had given up his passion for the sport after losing his sight to macular degeneration years ago. His sister brought him back to the lanes, where he now plays six games a week, reported The Times. “I can’t see the lane or the pins and have a heck of a time finding my ball sometimes,” Davis told The Times. He finds the raised dots lining the lanes and then relies on his hearing and friends to tell him how well he did. The perfect game has been his goal for years. "After I went blind, I just assumed it wouldn't happen," said Davis. Davis sports a 188 average and said he hopes to score another perfect game when he's 90, The Times reported. You can read much more on Davis' perfect game on The Storm Lake Times Web site. Blind Bowler Scores Perfect Game - Sports News Story - KCCI Des Moines |

One of our students, Sara, 17 years old, is in a substance rehab center in Chicago. Since she was 15 she has been using drugs, anything she could get her hands on, and a couple of times we've had to call the paramedics to get her because she semi-overdosed on triple C's. She had been using pot, coke, triple C's and was just starting to get into using meth and had also been drinking alot. Despite being in rehab centers in the Tampa area, and getting "clean", every time she came back to school, she would get in with her old crowd, and it would start all over again.
So how is this a Good News Story? Yesterday her mom paid me a visit. I had been communicating with her off and on and getting updates on her status. Sara has been talking with her mom alot lately, something she hadn't done for a long time. Her mom showed me a card she got from Sara that brought tears to my eyes. Partly because she was telling her mom how much she loves her and knows that her being in the rehab center was because her mom loved her so much, and partly because I hope she can handle it when she gets back to school next year! Sara has already told her mom she is scared because other than the "friends" she has been hanging out with she doesn't have any other friends. I told Ashley (my daughter) about Sara and Ashley (I LOVE HER SO MUCH) has said that she would love to meet Sara and hopefully become friends with her! ![]() Sara also realized that she had an eating disorder and is coping with that. She has told her mom all about how she will need to deal with it when she comes home and what she needs from her mom. I didn't realize how much of an impact I had on Sara's mom until she came in to my office with a "token of appreciation" gift and card for me! Some of my co-workers that Sara's mom has dealt with would get really annoyed with her, not wanting to listen to her talk about Sara. Sara's mom said I was the only one that she really felt comfortable talking to! ![]() ![]()
