La Fheile Padraig Shona Diobh go lear/Happy St Patrick's day to you all!
Well, today's the 17th of March, which is of course a very special day for Irish people like myself, because it was on this day sometime in the late 400s that Naomh Padraig (St Patrick to ye English speaking heathens
) drove the last slimy, treacherous snake, from Eire's hallowed Shores! He also managed to convince the genuinely heathen Celtic Irish tribes to abandon Celtic Polytheism for Christianity, using a Shamrock as a way to visually show the bible's interpretation of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost - he had an immense impact on the history of this island, being the man who brought about an age of Enlightenment, and put Ireland as the most important part of the Christian world - the country became a Monk's Workshop, as the Modern day Ardagh Chalice and Book of Kells can attest to. In any case, it is today remembered more as a beerfest or a way to pretend you have Irish blood in you, but either way I hope, wherever you are, you have a great one !I'll raise the first glass, to the truest Irishman there ever was (even if he was Welsh ) - La Fheile Padraig Shona Diobh go lear!![]()

As someone whose surname begins O', I put aside my lack of religion for a year in favour of my gaelic roots & celebrate the good Saint. Brought in a bagful of green food & drink to work today, much to the bemusement of my workmates (not too bemused to chow down though).
Glyn, as someone whose family is packed full of Dunstans, Johns' & other Cornish types, I've always felt that part of the world deserves a day of heavy drinking & pastie eating. Now, this will require much research & discussion among the ordinary fok of Cornwall. I think the best place to start is in the pub. Perhaps a long-term series of informal discussions in pubs all over Cornwall? Now, as I am at some remove from Cornwall I will obviously not be able to undertake the research myself. Do you feel up to the task? ![]()

Why don't you come over here and we shall hold earnest discussions over a Pellows pasty or three? I will then detail your good self to investigate the hostelries (of which there are many). |

I understand Blair is loathed, but he got on very well with the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern - I imagine Bertie's relations with 'The Broon' are considerably frostier. I think he'd like Alex Salmond, does he plan to run for PM anytime soon ?Last edited by crooks : 03-17-2008 at 15:07 PM. |
