I go to Home Depot which is much closer than Lowe's. However when it comes to selecting decent lumber, I might save time by cutting down the tree myself.

For other items I go to OSH. What I need to look at or compare (such as wood stains) everything is at eyeball level and the store is well lighted. At HD the lighting is poor and the wood stain chips are way over my head. That is if I can get past forklifts moving stock around and there aren't any other racks displaying stuff I don't want in the aisles blocking my way.

Edit: For paint I go to Dunn-Edwards. It's a true one coat paint. Home Depot paint takes at least two coats, sometimes three.

FYI:
Consumer Reports rates the HD paint brand #1.

That's why I don't subscribe to Consumer Reports. Believe me, we have painted and painted and painted. There is one brand of paint at HD that really is a one-coat paint. But it is very expensive.

At Dunn Edwards, they give me 20% off because I belong to Triple A so the price per gallon is only a couple of dollars more than HD's cheap paint.

Yes, for lumber, better to go to a lumber yard . Home Depot and Lowes (to a lesser extent in my area) have lumber on the racks too long. Not a lot of stock exchange. And the worst thing about their lumber is that they keep it inside in a climate controlled space. Even their pressure treated stuff.

All those beautiful boards inside are cupped, twisted and warped after being left outside for a day.

Much better to buy from a lumber yard that stored their material outside. Then acclimatize it to the indoors if its going to be used there. If stacked properly, you will get very little board movement.

To get really good results in a paint, Buy really good primer, and have it tinted to the final paint color.

It does 2 things. gives a good base of the final color so not as much paint is required. And just as important, lets you see what the place will look like BEFORE you commit to paint. Its easier to cover tinted primer than it is to have to cover up a painted wall.

I love the way some of these threads go from one topic to another! Although we are talking about dying hair and painting...guess it could be the same thing.

Me, I've colored my hair for a while. It's in the genes to gray early and I'm not ready for a head of silver hair. On some women it looks nice but on others it makes them look older than they are. And as long as my mom keeps doing her hair I'm going to do mine. No way I'm going silver before mom!

I've already got silver on the sides.

My father has assured me that I should not worry about this, as the rest of it will fall out long before it too goes silver.

I know, right? She so dam' cute.

She's thought about a bit of coloration to hide her first strands of gray. I don't care a bit either way, and I don't think it's major for her, either. So, whatevah.

Don't worry TH there are some women that like men without alot of hair - it just gets in the way and tugged on. Fairly useless really.

I think receding hairlines and baldness on a man is very sexy looking (think Sean Connery, Chris Daughtery to name a few).

Really depends on the man don't you think? Some men can carry the balding or even the close cut look very well. I don't find too many that can carry off the long hair/pony tail look though. But, when the right one comes along - do find that incredibly sexy - until I think about hitting the sheets with him. Then that sexiness he had just goes away.

I'm not quite ready to give up on the coloring quite yet but you've definitely given me something to think about. Thanks! My natural hair color right now is this weird streaky mix and I can't stand the idea of being a 51 year old zebra (or some other weird stripey animal). I'm getting quite tired of the coloring ball and chain. Maybe soon. When I finish growing up, maybe.
