Folding at home, or, only you can save humanity!

Happy New Year to everyone!! Maybe it's the California air getting to me, but I thought a good way to kick off 2008 would be to turn everyone on to a fabulous way to contribute to vital medical research. This site, Folding@home - Main , explains how you can donate your computer's unused computing power to help run protein folding simulations, essentially giving the researchers access to a massive supercomputer. For those of you with PS3s, it can be run on them, as well.

I hope you all have a wonderful start to 2008!

Geez, I thought we were going to be talking about the benefits of hanging clothes outside in the fresh air and how nice it is to smell them while folding.

I would prefer to rotisserie, smoke, bake, or grill my protein.) I have folded a slice of ham around a piece of cheese. Does that count?

The mechanisms of folding proteins and cellular communication rather interested me in college and I would have loved to learn more. Unfortunately, they handed me a diploma and booted me out the door. I am still stuck on dial up so I am not a good candidate. The medicinal value of the knowledge of protein folding is invaluable.

You may all rest assured, the joys of laundry folding will never be a subject I will post about. Though, Debbie, since we're on the subject at the moment, I like how clothes smell when they're dried outside, too.

I think that all depends on what you are down wind of.

I fondly remember the smell of my clothes, sheets, pillow cases, etc after being hung outside to dry. Unfortunately most communities condone clothes lines in the yards. Sometimes though I put my pillows out on the lanai to freshen them.

But like bonehead said, it depends on what you're down wind of. My back yard neighbors have three huge dogs that they don't clean up after in the yard. On those beautiful days when the windows could be open, they stay close!

I've been doing this with my wife's computer for some time, as she was rarely using it (& we have a cable internet connection). I used to do the same for SETI, but thought this "folding" effort was infinitely more applicable.

Now that she has a laptop which is even more rarely connected to our internet connection at home, I'll have to see about using my own home computer to continue "Clan Skull6's" "folding" efforts.

    Excellent idea--posting this link!

Both of you go stand in the corner until you can learn to behave yourselves.

And after that, there's plenty of laundry to be folded.
