They already are made of zinc (post 1982 cents anyway). The copper is just a plating.

I think it's the minting costs, not so much the metal content that makes them uneconomical to put in circulation.

The war cents (1943) were actually steel with a zinc plating.

Plus the distribution costs which will be high because of the distances involved. Wandering off thread somewhat, it seems to me that modern coins in general, no matter which country of origin, are inferior to the pre-war examples. Put them side by side and you will easily see the decline in the mintners art.

pennies are toxic when swaloved, i was told by a vet once, if you suspect your dog swaloved penny, do xray right away. any other coins are not life treatening, but penny can kill a dog, or a cat, even a child.

Sometimes things dont end up how they should, a son, a brother, a mentor, a teacher, a cousin, a nephew, a grandson and a god in my eyes.

Axe the sales tax. Problem solved.
You have no idea how nice it is to look at a price tag and immediatly know what you are going to pay for that item.

It is time for pesos, errr pennies to go away. Why take pennies back to the store when you can get a better return by melting them down for scrap?

As for the "new" dollar, it was, is, and always will be a stupid idea to make them the same size as quarters. This is just another proof that our country is run by morons.
