Oh hell, can somebody please tell me the real meaning of Christmas?
Having a ball and a break.

In India we have all these religious festivals and holidays in school.

Can't say education has gone bonkers because of the holidays!

Sounds like the Religion of Alvis from Sealab 2021.

Going swimming at the beach and eating too much, throwing the kids in the water and listening to our cricket team get a hiding from (insert any nation that can actually play cricket) on the radio.
Eating strawberries and cream, cold turkey, potato salad and anything else you can get out of the fridge.
Getting to see all your relatives and remembering why you don't see some of them for the rest of the year.
Taking the yacht out on the lake and doing nothing for four hours, "sorry dear, I got becalmed".
Noticing how old your parents look and thinking you've got to make more effort to see them as much as possible.
Spending more on presents than you get in return and not caring, because it's good to share.

This is my point - it is not all that serious. If someone wants to take a day off then take the day off. Celebrate a holiday - whatever. These holidays have been celebrated for a really long time here in the US, so now we have people coming here and wanting to change that - I dont think it is serious enough to change.

As Linus once said to Charlie Brown:

"And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the fields, keeping watch over their flocks by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the lord shone round about them, and they were so afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not, for behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you this day is born in the City of Bethlehem, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; you shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel, a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace, good will toward men'". That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie brown. "

I dont see anything wrong with them either - and I think the more that can join in the merrier, but its all good and fine until people start whining about other holidays. The US is filled with people from all over the world - every religion imaginable is represented here. If we took a day off to celebrate every religious holiday - nobody would ever work or go to school.

AND LEAVE US AND OUR FASTING ALONE - WE DONT WANT YOU FASTING WITH US ANYWAY!!

I'll happily drink to any holiday from any country or religion... be it Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, Sikh, German, French, Russian, Taiwanese, Pakistani, Afghan, Turk, Mexican... just tell me when your special day is... I am a true multi culturalist and believe we should celebrate each others special days...

Other then Canadian religous and national holidays... I don't support terrorists...

Perhaps one or both of us is biased by the nature of our societies. America is a much more intensly Christian place than most other countries, because of this, Christian religious holidays seem to semi-merge with civic institutions/holidays, which is perhaps why non-Christians are more likely to celebrate Christmas in the US. At least that is my amateur assesment, I'm sure you will tell me if there is something wrong with it. But if I am right, then I understand why you consider it senseless whining.

It is not only for Christians - It is for the celebration of the independence of America - so if the person or one of their direct ancestors were not here to be part of that independence - then leave the holiday alone. People whine and moan about not getting "their" holidays - so then only celebrate "their" holidays.
But Christmas and Independence Day are not the same type of holiday. It is unpatriotic, irrational, and ungrateful to complain about Independence Day being an official day off. America and being American are related to Independence Day. Christmas is celebrated by most Americans, but it is not (or should not be) un-American to not celebrate Christmas.

A non-issue. Next year, I'm taking my daughter to celebrate her great grandmother's 100th birthday (strangely enough, only they can speak to each other even though my grandmother don't know a word of English and my daughter has never been taught Chinese and yet, they know what they're talking about). I've talked to my daughter's teacher next year (Grade 1) and she will make sure that nothing important happens that week.

I am sure that if something is important that I will try to accomodate.

It's just a matter of communications.
