Byzantium/Augusta Antonina/
New Rome/Constantinople/Kostantiniyye/Stamboul/Islambol/Istanbul what ever you call it is a city for peace...It is the only place in the world where you can hear the prayers of all three monotheist religions (Islam, Christianity and Judaism). It is the only place in the world where people belonging to the aforementioned religions live hand in hand.

How so? The only point he made was that it was Greek, Roman, then Greek before it was Turkish. -And the height was during the Roman and Greek period. The thing that made the city cultured before the modern times was the Greco-Roman architecture and culture thatn mingled with Persian, and Assyrian concepts. The thing that made it cosmopolitan were the Greek achievements that attracted people worldwide to settle in the city. But that was then.

You have to accept my friend that the Turks are the actual ones who can take credit for modern day Istanbul. As mentioned in my previous posts, there is not a whole lot left from the past inhabitants. The modern day metropolis is the product of generations of Imperial Ottoman/Turkish architecture. Just look at Ankara...85 years ago it was a swamp. Today it is one of the worlds largest and most modern cities.

Now is now. The city is a great city, to the credit of the Turkish people. However, I don't think the city most beautiful as is the subject of the thread.

You took offence to that.

No, no I am not the paranoid objectionist you may think I am. I don't object to everything you say for the sake of it

Whether the city is beautiful or not is subjective. Everyone will have his/her own respective opinion.

I only objected to two things: (1) The misunderstanding regarding the use of the word "dirty" to signify Istanbul and (2) Recognition of the fact that, the current state the city is in is the product of the Turks.

I respect your opinion that it is not the most beautiful city in the world, as I am sure you will have your reasons for this thought.

In actual fact, Tastes and Colours cannot and should not be the subject of debate.

Perhaps this thread should embrace all beautiful cities.

"Ἀνάγκᾳ δ’οὐδὲ θεοὶ μάχονται" my greek friend...Prior to this the same was done to Mosques in Spain by the Christian community. Furthermore, the Sultan had to do this in order to show that the city was now under Imperial Ottoman Rule.

I would also like to bring to your attention that Αγία Σοφία is today not a mosque but in fact a museum. A museum which brings together Islam and Christianity.

It sounds like what my South African Friend Fricky Unpronounceable used to call a One Horse Dorp!

yeah Istanbul is one of the most beautiful cities in Turkiye and in the world.

but the traffic jam and over-population destroy its beauty. Istanbul is as if the cultural capital of Turkiye.

I believe the grid-locked roads will be overcome by 2009. There are some major projects underway in order to achieve this. In 2009, Turkey will have the largest Metro in the world, surpassing even Japan!
